“Sol will never want that,” Dr. Jerami answered because Sol was too confused to reply.
Aside from their mother acting crazy most of the time and the voice Luna was hearing from within his head, their lives had been normal. But after their encounter with Lei, Dad was saying monsters exist and they wanted to use Luna in gathering an army of monsters. How crazy and impossible can those words be?
“It’s the same for Luna,” Dr. Jerami put her palm over Luna’s forehead. “You know they are powerful enough to help us in fighting that army of sins. Instead of being afraid in the abilities of your children, have confidence in them. Believe in the strength of their souls.”
“You only want to use my children,” Dad irritably shot at Dr. Jerami who looked hurt.
“Yes, she wants to use your children to save her son,” an arrogant man leaning on the corridor railing with his arms crossed had agreed to Dad. He was probably the same age as Sol and Luna.
“But no one can save me,” the arrogant young man went on with a shrug of his shoulders. “I don’t need saving.”
“Carl, let’s talk later,” Dr. Jerami pleaded the arrogant young man.
“Okay. I’ll leave,” Carl said, putting his hands in the side pockets of his blue jeans. “I only want to take a look at your patients and see how caring you are with them. I love seeing how much you care for them,” his voice was filled with sarcasm, and as he descended the stairs, Dr. Jerami wiped the tears that trickled from her eyes.
“Sorry for that,” the doctor shamefully uttered as she began cleaning Dad’s wounds. “I’ve been helping a lot of people win over their sins, but I cannot save my only son from being devoured by envy. It’s embarrassing and frustrating.”
“Why don’t you stop being a doctor and focus on your son?” Dad sincerely suggested. “He is envious of your patients. If you focus on him, he will see how much you love him.”
“He is not only arrogant but selfish,” Sol said, annoyed at how childish Carl was. “Luna had never been loved by Mom but instead of hating her, he works hard every day of his life just to be appreciated by Mom. Carl should be embarrassed.”
“That is why I am hoping that Luna can do something to change my son. Let Luna talk to him, please, Martin.”
“We will talk to him once Luna gets better,” Sol promised. “But before that, I want to know what’s happening. Why only now? Who is Lei? What is this army of sins? Who are these monsters? I want to protect Luna, but I can’t do that without knowing who and what I am facing? Tell me everything, Dad.”
“It is time to tell them about their gifts, Martin,” Dr. Jerami said when she was done wrapping bandages over Dad’s forehead and on his left leg. “But not here. I need to focus on Luna’s treatment. Talk downstairs or at the front yard. I’ll call you once I’m done here.”
“We’ll talk downstairs,” Dad said, holding his bandaged leg. “I can’t strain my wounded leg. Your Mom will become hysterical if she sees me like this. I need to recover fast.”
“Speaking of Mom becoming hysterical…” Sol pulled his phone from the pocket of his pants and checked the screen. “We should be receiving a lot of messages and missed calls from her, right? Not only because today is mine and Luna’s birthday but because she worries too much whenever you and I arrived at home late.”
Dad quickly pulled his phone from the pocket of his pants and called Mom.
“She’s not answering,” Dad muttered, suddenly looking terrified. “She never leaves her phone unattended,” he glanced at Sol and anxiously commanded. “Let’s check up on her.”
“Jerami…”
“I’ll take care of your son,” she sincerely promised before Dad could finish his sentence. “Here,” she tossed the car key at Dad. “Take care of my car.”
“Let’s go, Sol.” Dad was still limping but his pace was quick.
Sol glanced at Luna, torn between leaving him at a stranger’s house and checking up on Mom. Dr. Jerami seemed like a genuine person but...
“SON! HURRY UP!!!” Dad frantically yelled and Sol had no choice but to follow his father and leave his twin brother at the hands of a stranger.
Please, Luna, be safe.
