DESTINY BECKONS

“Kadar sent you?” Dacia narrowed her eyes. “Why?”

“He hasn’t been well.” Iola made Nesmir reply as he undid Dacia’s shackles. “Come now, we must find my gra... the clansman.”

“Do you know where he is being held?” The mercenary rubbed her wrists and looked at the young guardsman with suspicion.

“I... I must think.” Iola searched the young guard’s memories. “Yes, yes... he is in the deepest of the dungeons.”

“Then let us go.” Dacia stood up, free of her rusted shackles. “I can’t wait to get this done with.”

“This way.” Nesmir stepped out of the cell and held the torch before him, pointed toward another corridor with steps going further down. “Swiftly now.”

“How deep does this dungeon go?” Dacia grumbled as she fell in step behind the young guardsman.

“There it is... that solitary door at the end of this corridor.” Iola stated through Nesmir, almost sensing her grandfather’s presence.

They nearly ran the last few paces.

Iola’s anticipation transferred to her host, making Nesmir’s hands tremble as he inserted the large iron key into the massive door.

She hoped Dacia wouldn’t notice.

The heavy door gave in with a protesting groan. Nesmir almost tripped over his own feet being rushed by Iola’s urgency.

Dacia was close on his heels. Before them, an old man, gaunt and haggard, gave them a weak smile.

His eyes, however, were keen and bright as a summer morning.

“Iola, my dear child.” He said in a clear voice. “I knew you would come.”
