“What?” Nesmir echoed Iola’s shock.
“Iola?” Dacia looked confused. “Where?”
“Right here with us.” Haas nodded at Nesmir.
“The dungeon must have further addled his senile mind.” The gritty mercenary snorted. “Come on, boy; let’s get him out of here.”
Nesmir stood frozen in place.
Iola’s mind reeled.
Haas knew that she was inside the guard’s head.
Then it dawned on her.
It was her grandfather all along who gave her the strength and courage to tap into this strange gift she had.
It was almost as if he had guided her the entire way.
The realisation filled her with indescribable happiness, yet at the same time she felt the most terrible dread she ever had experienced.
“Haven’t you heard me, boy?” Dacia grasped Nesmir’s arm. “We have to get him out of here. Now!”
“Oh, I am afraid, that won’t be quite necessary.” The silver-haired clan shaman rose to his feet, towering over the two of them.
“Whatever do you mean, gra... er, sir?” Nesmir sounded crestfallen. “We are here to set you free.”
“Yes, you are, my precious Iola.” Haas’ bright eyes softened. “I am ready to fly to my freedom.”
“Then why are we still standing around here talking?” Dacia shook her head exasperatedly. “Let’s go.”
“Iola, my time has come.” Haas said softly, placing his hands on Nesmir’s broad shoulders. “And our people will need a stronger, more able spirit leader.”
“No, grandfather.” Iola sobbed through Nesmir. “I can see in your mind what you mean... there has to be another way.”
“It is the only way, my dear child.” Her grandfather nodded, smiling sadly. “It is time to pass on the torch; Iola... that is why you are here... that is why I guided you here.”
“What is this madness...?” Dacia looked at Nesmir agitatedly and then at Haas. “Where does Iola come into all this?”
