The Defiance of a Pair of Lilies

«A Ghoul, and some other Things»

«A Ghoul, and some other Things»

Jan 12, 2020

I thought as fast as I could in a situation like this. The amount of yelling even made me more tense than I did. Just how am I going to be able to help as best I could with only a 100 MP. It was confusing, even for me. Trying to put out a fire caused by roughly 2000 MP using only a fraction of how much was used to cause it.

Making it rain. That's probably the only way I can be of actual help. But not only am I clueless about how I can make it rain, I also don't have a lot of mana left. I need something to refill my mana. Something similar to recovery magic or some sort of potion.

That's it!

"Heldic-san! Do you have some sort of mana recovery potion?!" I yelled.

He looked surprised when I called him as he was about to shoot a large ball of water at the raging flames in front of him. "I do, but it's better for you to stand back and let me do the job. I'm the one that caused it after all."

"O...okay then…" I walked back and stood a bit farther from the flames.

The number of people running past me to dump a bucket of water onto the fire was reaching more than a dozen. Now that I've stood far from it, I can actually notice that the fire had gotten larger than it did earlier. It's not that I don't trust Heldic, but I don't really think he has that much mana anymore after that fireball from earlier. That mass of water is probably gonna be his last spell for a while until he could recover all of it.

But then it dawned on me, that I haven't thought of appraising him. He didn't look tired at all after that fireball, and it even seemed like he used most of his mana earlier. Unless…

System Description:

A man set on becoming the best mage he could ever become. Gaining the title <Wisdom of Three> after turning level [2] with his unbalanced status that even a normal mage would be paralyzed at its sight. His main motivation for doing so is due to the fact that a childhood crush influenced him to do so. He also really just likes to use magic.

-----

Holy balls how the hell is his status like that?!

The actual distribution of his stats boggled me, almost making me yell in surprise. His intelligence stat made me shudder thinking he actually had the guts to mainly put everything into his magic. I know that his other stats were somewhat high but that'd be compared to a level [1] slightly on the weaker side! He shouldn't be able to survive with just that!

Then I remembered the fact that parties of adventurers could be made. That with the right set up, they could be a perfectly balanced team. I wouldn't even be surprised if he said that Garius and him were in the same party.

I put all of that to think about later and just attentively watch how he would actually put out the large flame. Currently, the amount of water he's amassed above him was already comparable to the amount of water needed to fill an 8x4x1.7 meter pool.

Swinging his arms and staff to point at the flames, the large ball of water followed, splashing onto the burning soil. The water spread across the ground, reaching all the places the fire was burning. And ever so slowly, the water seeped into the ground.

Everyone sighed in relief shortly after. Luckily, no Ghouls formed in the span of time the fire was burning. Also, the water from Heldic's spell was already gone and went into the ground, probably already dispersed so there probably isn't any risk of any Ghouls appearing from that.

Chloe then irritatedly stomped towards where Heldic was. When he noticed her walking behind her, he turned around. Only to be smacked on the head by Chloe.

"Fucking Dumbass!"

"Sorry!"

The two argued like a married couple(I guess…?). They looked like they were gonna be fine if we leave them alone so I just waited and turned to Garius. He's still tense, and he hasn't put back his sword in its sheath yet. Why is that? I asked myself.

"Garius-san, what's wrong?" I asked him.

"It's still not over. I sense something over there. There's a ghoul over there."

I quickly turned my head towards where the fire once burned. I could actually sense it. There IS something over there. From a single point a few feet above the ground, a collection of mana compressed and made a tiny purple shard. It hovered for a while.

Wait, isn't that…

The shard was then surrounded by flames, forming something similar to a humanoid body. Everyone in the vicinity were surprised to see its unexpected appearance. They readied themselves. Then…

A spear fully made of ice pierced through its body, destroying the shard in its chest. It's body crumbled as it lost its source of energy, dying fully after the flames dissipated. Everyone around were frozen in their places, watching where the ghoul once hovered.

"That was a close one…" I whispered, standing in a way that looked like I just threw a javelin. I didn't really notice my body moving on instinct, until I saw the spear form in my hand.

[ Acquired the skill [Ice Magic(Low)]! ]

[ 1 Skill point acquired! ]

The female voice notified me. It seems like you could just acquire new skills by being able to use them even though you haven't unlocked it yet. Luckily, I didn't lose any of my knowledge from back on Earth.

"Phew…" I sighed, composing myself then looking at everyone around. They were all stunned, as expected. This is getting really awkward by the second.

Garius seemed to have noticed my restlessness as I looked at everyone just stand. "Ahem… Chloe, Heldic, we should probably finish this test already."

The two finally got out of their trance and walked up to us right after announcing to everyone else that everything is fine now. And so, their days seemed to continue with an unexpected event happening today.

"Right, Kazuki-kun, all you need to do is fill out a form inside the guild. You two, just, behave, I guess..?" Chloe seemed a bit exhausted just by that accident happening. "Let's go."

She walked into the building and I followed, leaving Heldic and Garius to themselves. Upon entering the guildhouse again, we entered some office-like room and I was told to sit down.

Chloe took a piece of paper from a drawer then placed it on the table in front of me, along with a pen and some ink to write with. "Fill this in with the stated requirements. Just do it quickly. I need some rest…" She then sat down and lowered her head. I could hear a slight whisper from her dejected expression. Something about Heldic hating her or something like that.

I looked at the piece of paper and scanned through it. It asked for my name(last name optional), class(still optional), level, birth date, elemental affinity, and that's basically all of it.

With the pen in hand and already dipped in ink, I started writing all of the requirements. Though I was a bit confused as to why they just didn't use an appraisal ring. I saved that question for later.

As I reached the part where I had to write my elemental affinity, I just chose to write Lightning as the affinity. Since it was what I was most proficient and talented in using in my past life.

After writing down everything, I just noticed all of what I wrote were then rewritten to the alphabet of this world. I could even read it clearly even though I didn't know any of the alphabet here.

[ System Skill [Auto Translate/Rewrite] is constantly active to help the recipient of the system ]

The system notified me. It was convenient, really, really convenient. The system even answers some fair amount of my questions. I really do wonder how it was made. But thinking that it might actually just be something snapped into existence by some god made me a bit disappointed.

"Chloe-san, here." I handed her the paper. She looked like she had finally gotten over that small problem from earlier.

"Okay, please return here in the afternoon and your license will be ready." She told me.

"I'll return later then."

I let myself out of the room and walked past the reception from earlier and went out of the guild, still with everything I had before I entered with nothing missing.

I planned on doing something productive to pass the time. Though I can't seem to be able to think of anything else except two things; go to a library, or eat lunch somewhere.

I stood in front of the guild for a while, choosing which I should do first. But I soon settled with going to the library since I remembered that I have no money. I just hope that the library doesn't have some sort of fee. It wasn't like I was gonna borrow a book or something. I don't even have a place to stay yet. Alright, after I get the money from all the crystals I've gotten, I'm going to find a good inn.

Walking around for a while since I absolutely had no idea where things were, I finally found the library in town. It didn't look like it had the most number of books but it's information nonetheless. I just need to learn about the demon beasts, some history, the magic, and probably some common sense. Since I still had absolutely no idea how to act in this world.

I went inside the establishment and looked for a book that would probably give me the most information about the world. Unsurprisingly, there were sections for each kind of book and I was able to easily find what I needed.

"World History for the Uneducated," the title written on it says. It's technically true that I'm one of the uneducated since I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about this world.

I flipped through a few of the pages and quickly thought this book would be good enough. "It's basically a summary with a bit of details put in for extra information, this is perfect." I then took a seat somewhere inside the library and quickly read through all the very important parts I needed to know. Learning every other bit has to wait for another time.

As summarized as I can possibly do so, this is the really basic summary of this world's history and its gods. It basically repeats the creation of man from the bible but the humans weren't really that hard headed. So, the civilization flourished with the gods assisting them. But as time passed, one god left to create a realm of his own. Soon, the others followed only to leave this world at the hands of an artificial god which the other gods made to handle this world along with its kings and rulers. Already with everything they would ever need to survive, the world continued safely. Until the Artificial God seemed to have gotten bored. He was still human after all.

And so, he was renamed multiple times. During the time he only had the interest in annoying people, he was called the Trickster God. Slowly transitioning to an evil being, his name was the Demon King. Then, God of Demons. And at the last phase of his unexpected turn, It was simply called The Devil.

The gods returned only to see destruction scattered all around the world. And the sudden appearance of the demon beasts shocked them. Due to Its exponential growth, It was able to easily kill a god. Luck being with the gods' sides, they won. But only for a short period of time. They had no strength to fend It off another time. They needed to regain their strength before they could take It on another time.

And so, the creation of many systems in the world occurred. The humans lived normally after that and got stronger by the time. But now, they had to kill beasts mostly size incomparable to theirs to survive. As well as the mostly unconquered dungeons sprawled out around the continent and the others around it.

That was basically it. Everything after that was just a repeat of the middle ages on Earth with the details different. So, I just returned from the book and took another about the world's magic system.

I also read through it but at a slower pace from earlier and understood a lot of the basics. Chants were the norm here. And using a chant is the most basic way to materialize mana. One advanced form is casting a spell without the use of chants. Since vision is the most important in materializing mana, it was expected. A person that has trouble in creating a vision in his/her mind would likely not be able to cast magic unless he/she uses a chant, which would likely make the person think of the spell's appearance.

Well, that was just one of the advanced ways of materializing mana. Some other examples are runes, weapon enchantments, magic circles, item infusion, and a few more. I don't really want to delve too much into it yet but a lot of the advanced ways have overlapping properties. An example of that is runes and magic circles. Runes are basically magic circles, but it will continue to exist until some sort of a condition is done. You could even compare it to a curse. Magic circles on the other hand are some type of catalyst that basically amplify your spells. I haven't understood much of it yet but I plan to do so in the future.

A few hours had already passed since noon. I didn't even notice while I was reading. But I knew it was about time I returned to the guild. And so, I left the library quietly and returned to the guild to see if my licence was already prepared.

As I got there, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I went inside, walked to Chloe behind the counter, then asked if my licence was already done. She said that it was finished in about an hour ago and gave it to me. The class was the only thing left blank, probably to be changed at a later date.

Then, I asked her to exchange all of the crystals I got from the dungeon. But I didn't give the crystal I got from the grey bear since I might have a different use for it some time in the future.

I got roughly one gold coin, forty silver, and eighteen bronze. It was a lot to be quite honest, but I have nothing else to say since I think I got more than a hundred crystals. Also, I just learned earlier from the library that the currency here are copper, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum coins from least worth to most. With one platinum being a hundred gold, one gold being a hundred silver, and so on.

The time I was there was really short since I really wanted to eat now that I have the money to buy some. And so, I bought food after I left the guildhouse. There was nothing of note that happened after all that and I was able to stay at a reasonably priced inn. It was a bit difficult to convince the owners that I didn't run away from home but since I was still able to stay, I just put it aside and ignored it. Then, the first day of me being in this world(technically) had finally concluded.
