The Crescent Demons

Hair Clip

Hair Clip

Dec 15, 2019

I climb down the cold, frozen moss. I land on the snow with a crunch. I walk slowly and try not to make much sound. When The Home is no longer in view I start to run. I knock on the beautiful dark wooden door. No response.

“Hello?” I whisper. Still no response. “Harper?!” Silence. I open the door and leave to door open a crack. There’s no light on. I turn on the light. I check in all the rooms but I can’t find her. “I hope she’s not getting herself into more trouble” I say to myself. I wander around her room then I hear the squeak of the door.

“Hello? I have a knife and I’m not afraid to use it. Now show yourself!” I slowly walk out of her room. She looks at me and sighs. Her stance relaxes. “I thought you were someone else.”

“Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“It’s fine. You sound funny. No offense. Did you lose another tooth?” I walk over to her and help her take her coat off. I hang it on the hook by the door.

“Yeah I did.”

“I wonder why your losing your teeth. It’s strange. Do you not brush your teeth?”

“I haven’t the past couple nights just because I’ve been locked in my prison cell but I’ve always brushed my teeth every morning and night so it can’t be from that. To change the subject. Have you eaten yet?”

“No. I’ve been busy. I went for a run. Speaking of which I’m going to go change real fast then I’ll make something to eat.” She walks into her room and closes the door. I walk into the kitchen. I open the pantry and grab out some bread. I grab the peanut butter then I grab the jelly out of the fridge. I grab a butter knife and a spoon. I make two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I put them on plates and set them on the table. Harper walks out a second later. I stop in my tracks and just stare at her. She’s now wearing light navy blue tight jeans with a white ruffled shirt. She has her perfectly curled auburn hair up in a high half pony tail. She has pink lips sick on and lip gloss. I take a step closer to her.

“Y…you look gorgeous! I… I think you’re beautiful.” She looks at the ground and walks over to me. “I… I made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.” She sits down at the table and I sit down next to her. We eat in silence. When we’re down she stands up and walks into her parent’s room. She walks out with a small box. She sets it on the table. It’s got a large layer of dust on it. She blows all the dust off and opens it. She pulls out a small hair clip. It’s a beautiful golden color. It’s got pieces that swirl around it all over. She hands it to me and kneels in front of me.

“Will you help me put it in?” She points at a spot on the side of her head. She turns her head to the side and I carefully slip it into her hair. She stands up and looks at me. “It was my mothers. She gave it to me before she died. How does it look?”

“Beautiful. I think you look astonishing. You look elegant but simple at the same time.”

“Thank you. Want to play a board game?”

“Sure.” She walks into her parent’s room again and brings out a couple games. We pick out The Truth Game. “Okay so how do you play this game?”

“Well it’s pretty much a get to know you game. You pull out a card on your turn and you chose one of the three questions and you write down what you think the answer is. Then you ask the other player. If you get it right then you move your piece on the board one place.

“Okay. Can I go first?’

“Sure” I pull out a card and pick the question I want. I write down what I think it is.

“Okay. What is your favorite color? I wrote blue.”

“Oh! That’s… wrong.” We laugh. “It’s… ready for it, indigo.”

“I never would have guessed that.” I put the card in the back of the deck. “Your turn.” She pulls out a card and rights something on here white board.

“What’s you moms name? I guessed Sarah.”

“Nope. Her name is really unique, it’s Berxly”

“That really is a unique name.” I grab a card and write down my guess.

“When’s your birthday? I guessed December 29”

“Your so close. It’s December 25”

“Man, I was so close.” She pulls a card and writes something down.

“How many siblings do you have? I guessed 0”

“That’s right. Well at least as far as I know.”

“Yes!” She moves her piece forward one on the board. I pull out a card and write something down.

“What is your favorite hobby? I guessed reading.”

“Correct.” She moves my piece one. We play this game for a while.

“Before you go will you tuck me in and sing me a song. I know it’s childish but I have a challenging time getting to sleep.”

“Of course.” I wait in the living area while she changes. She opens the door and she gets in bed. I pull the covers up to her chin. I sit on the edge of the bed and start to sing a song my mom used to sing me when I was a small child. When I’m done. I place a kiss on her forehead. I head back to The Home. I go to sleep.
