“To you... Iola?” Dacia’s brow furrowed sharply. “You, who is now a man that I have never met before...”

“No, not this body. But to me, his granddaughter Iola.” The young guard mouthed Iola’s thoughts as expressively as she would have. “Through this man, Nesmir, my grandfather has reached out to me.”

“There is much about you strange clanspeople that I do not know about... nor care to.” Dacia looked back at the cell door. “Are you going to leave him in there like that?”

“Yes, that was his wish...” Nesmir nodded. “...and also the most reasonable thing to do, even though I say this with a heavy heart. Esamos will now be denied the public execution he so desired, and my grandfather’s spirit and guidance will live on through me for our people.”

“I see.” Dacia looked at Nesmir doubtfully, not knowing that Iola could see her irritable expression. “And how long are you going to keep this guardsman in thrall?”

“Just as soon as we are outside.” She had Nesmir smile at the mercenary.

“Where are you now...” Dacia looked away as they made their way out of the dungeon. “Somewhere far from here or near.”

“Very near.”

“Good. Stay right there... we have much to talk about once we get back to our inn, little one, over a belly full of good food and a few pitchers of ale.”
