Asheron sought with his head propped up on his hand. Two of his fingers resting on his temples.
Not only was it early in the morning, which is when a vampire would usually and should be turning in to rest, but for the past two hour he had to sit through two noble vampire argue over a piece a land.
"Well, why the bloody hell not!" Lord Barteous a slightly plump vampire bellowed from across the table.
"Because it's my property." Lord Elmeese replied plainly rubbing the stubble on his chin. He was the wealthiest vampire in the city, and it was one of his houses that Asheron and the other few nobles occupied at the moment. It was the house Lord Elmeese had designated as the Conference House.
"Don't you have enough property! What use is a small piece of land to you anyway?!"
"What use is it to you lord Barteous?"
They could sense that the argument was about to start all over again, and while almost everyone had thought this spectacle was amusing at first, it had dragged on long enough to only be annoying. Especially to Asheron.
He watched the two Lord's argue with narrowed eyes. His pale lips were turned down in a deep frown. The "emergency" meeting had been called early that morning just as Asheron had a chance to lay his head down on his pillow.
Asheron lightly tapped his fingernail against the table. He was tired and cranky and no one had yet to mention what this whole emergency actually was.
Asheron finally could take no more of the constant bickering and opened his mouth to speak, but he was interrupted by someone else.
"As fun as it is too watch you two boys play, why don't we have a...change of topic? Such as, why we were all called here so early in the morning?" Although her voice was playful, there was a hint of ice in her words.
Everyone knew how much Lady Rose cared about her appearance and sleep was a big part of her beauty regime.
The two lords exchanged looks before Barteous sought heavily into his wooden chair in defeat, crossing his arms childishly. Lord Elmeese cleared his throat and stood.
"I have very important news that I'm sure you will all be interested in hearing." He paused dramatically but upon seeing the blank faces that peered back at him, he sighed and got to the point.
"A brother of ours, who we lost contact with many years ago, has returned."
An ominous shiver traveled down Asheron's spine.
"Who is it?" Asked Mickey. He was a human-made vampire with no Noble background. The only reason he was even allowed at the meetings was because of his association with Lady Rose.
Lord Elmeese didn't even glance at him.
"Vlad."
Asheron didn't think it was possible for the room to become anymore quite than it already was. No one moved no one even breathed.
"Also," Lord Elmeese continued after another short pause, "He will need a place to stay while a place is made for him."
All the mouths in the room where sealed. No one in their right mind would volunteer to take in "Vlad".
"He contacted you did he not? Then why don't you take him?" A young lord named Henry suggested.
"Ah, well I have no empty rooms for him. He can not stay with me." Lord Elmeese said with a shake of his head. An obvious lie. Lord Elmeese had enough room in his house to allow a small village to take refuge in.
"What about you Barteous?"
"Me?! I am too busy to babysit!"
And once again the arguing started again. This time it involves more than just the two lords. Asheron rubbed his throbbing temples and tried to pretend he was anywhere but here.
"What about Asheron?" Lady Rose suddenly said and the noise instantly ceased.
All eyes turned to him in an instant.
"That's right. Lord Asheron is a private person so he doesn't have many servants. He must have plenty of empty rooms." Lord Barteous added eagerly.
"I also remember that Vlad was fond of Asheron correct?" Lord Elmeese said thoughtfully. Sounds of agreement went around the room.
No. Incorrect! Asheron thought as he looked between all of them his eyes slightly widened.
"What nonsense are you saying?" He asked unable to hide the rising anger in his voice.
"Don't try to deny it you were practically friends." Lady Rose said looking at Asheron with a slight smirk on her face.
Asheron glared at her. It was clear that she was doing this on purpose and everyone else was adding on to make him a scapegoat.
"Then it's settled." Lord Elmeese said with a clap bringing everyone's attention back to him. He grinned at Asheron showing off his shiny fangs.
"I will send him your address tomorrow." Then to everyone else he said. "A ball will help to honor the return of our brother, so be expecting an invitation. Now I'm sure everyone can see themselves out." With that lord Elmeese inclined his head and exited the room.
Asheron could do nothing but grimace silently and continue to rub his temples. He felt two pairs of eyes burning into the side of his head and heard a light snicker.
He ignored them. He didn't think he could deal with any more annoyances today.
