"You're made of magic!" Erik said once again.
"Wait, how am I made of magic?! My mom and dad were both human! I-I think," Lucy suddenly wasn't sure.
"You're right, they are human," Erik explained. "However, your aunt and your grandparents were not. They had magic too. So now that gene has carried over to you!" Eriks smiled.
Lucy stared at him with stars in her eyes. "Am I a wish holder too?..."
"No my dear, even better! You are a wish maker!" Erik said, as if everyone in the world knew that. "You give people paper stars and tell them to make a wish then blow on it! Once they do this, the star will evaporate and it will come to me and other wish holders! The more stars you make, the more wishes you can grant! His eyes widened as he remembered something "Just don't forget one more important thing," he leaned down and whispered, "you can't grant your own wishes."
"Why not?" Lucy certainly had a lot of questions on this fine morning.
"Well, some people fall under the Deadly Sin of greed," replied the angel with some despair is his voice. "If someone could grant their own wishes, then you would wish for an excessive amount of things. Oh, that reminds me, you have a right to deny someone their wish. If it could cause harm to someone, it's okay to say no." Erik sighed and gave Lucy a sad gaze. "It's too bad... you don't seem like someone who would abuse this power. Is it okay if you can't grant your own?"
"Yes, of course that's fine! I'll be able to grant other people their wishes and then they'll be happy and no one in the world will be sad anymore!" This child truly knew not of the word hatred.
"You're such an optimistic child! I would love to stay and talk longer, but," Erik voice became sad as he looked to the ground. "I believe you need to return to class now." The man whom Lucy had just met seemed more responsible than her own parents.
Lucy had completely forgotten that she was supposed to be in school. "Oh right, okay!" She began to shove her things back into her back pack when Erik spoke up.
"Oh, wait, I forgot something else important!" Erik said. "Do you know how to make origami paper stars?"
Lucy shook her head.
Erik pulled out to strips of paper from thin air and offered one to Lucy. She accepted it without hesitation.
"So first you must fold it like so..." Erik began to teach Lucy how to properly make an origami star. After a few seconds, they were done. Lucy had never done origami before, so she was proud that it turned out right. Erik seemed proud of her as well.
"Excellent!" Erik exclaimed. "After you finish making a star, give it to someone and tell them to think of a wish. Once they do this, they need to blow on it and it will disappear and be sent to me. Okay?"
"Yeah, okay!" She smiled.
Erik smiled. "You really do need to get to class now. Education is very important."
Lucy turned to look at the school, her smile fading as she hesitated. "I-I don't know if I should. The other students are probably happy that I'm not there..."
"Well that's not a very positive thought." Erik thought for a moment. "I'll tell you what, since I'm your guardian angel, I'll go with you to class. If anyone starts being rude to you, I'll help. And by the way, no one aside from you will be able to see me unless I choose to be seen. Are you okay with going to class now?"
Lucy nodded slowly. "Yeah, okay. As long as you're with me, nothing can go wrong!" She smiled again.
She and Erik began their short walk back to the school. Lucy admired the autumn leaves and noticed how Eriks footsteps made no sound.
It's probably because hes an angel... Lucy assured herself.
Just as Lucy was about to grab the door handle to her classroom, someone next to her coughed.
"Hall pass?" A chubby, fifth grade boy glared at her. He had a badge that said "HALL MONITOR," as well as a beanie and he was chewing gum. Those last two things were not allowed in school.
Lucy blushed "I um, I just went to use the bathroom and I-"
"So where's your hall pass and why did you take your backpack?" He blew a bubble with his sweet gum, yet his voice was sour.
Lucy's voice began to fail her as she tensed up. How sad that the first time she is noticed, she is in trouble. Although, she should have expected this since it wasn't the first...
Erik, being unseen, walked behind the boy. He grabbed the boys hat, and pulled it over his eyes. "Lucy, go, now!" He held the door open for her as she slipped in. Erik followed.
The class was chattery and there was a mess of glitter in one corner of the room. As Lucy had thought, no one noticed her absence.
She quickly went to the back of the room and sat at her desk, both relived and upset that no one noticed she left. However, her heart sank when she saw the boy enter the room.
His face was red and he was no longer wearing his hat, nor chewing gum. He rushed to the teachers desk. They spoke in a hushed and some what urgent whisper.
The teacher looked at him, and then to Lucy in annoyance, then back at him.
"Lucy, can you come here please?" She said in a tone that only bad kids heard.
The class suddenly fell silent as Lucy began her walk of shame.
As Lucy walked towards the front of the classroom, she heard whispers.
"What do you think she did this time?"
"She's just like her brother, she's gonna get sent away too"
"I told you Tiffany, she's bad news"
"This is why I told you not to ask her out, idiot." Lucy was slightly confused on the last thing she heard but disregarded it once she was in front of the teacher.
The teacher seemed very agitated, and Lucy could have sworn that a vein popped. "This young man here says that you were skipping class and viciously attacked him. Is that true?"
Lucy shook her head.
"Then can you please explain why he has cuts on his arms?" The boy rolled up his sleeves, showing deep scars.
Lucy turned to Erik in fear.
"You saw what I did! All I did was pull his hat over his eyes, honest!" No on heard Erik speak except Lucy.
"...I don't know." Was all Lucy was able to say.
"I find that hard to believe." The teacher said. "I was going to allow this boy to take you to the office but clearly that would put him in danger." The teachers voice cracked. From what, who knows. "So now I will have to stop class just to take you to the principal. Young man, may you please watch my classroom?"
The boy nodded as he bang to whimper. "As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else..." He had the tone of someone who often lied, but no one was ever on Lucy's side.
The teacher tightly grabbed Lucy's arm and dragged her to the office. Erik followed close by. He was in panic.
"I'm so so sorry Lucy, I swear, I didn't hurt him, I'm supposed to be your guardian angel and I've completely failed I'm really really sorry I don't know what to do!"
The truth was, Lucy was used to this. She was used to being dragged to see the principal for something she didn't do. In fact, this happened almost on a weekly basis. It was the only time she was ever noticed.
Lucy was sat down in a waiting room with no staff members. The only other person in the room was a red haired girl. She appeared to be an eighth grader and she was drinking an orange smoothie.
"You will wait here like a good girl, although you are clearly not." The teacher said, as she slammed the door and stormed off. Erik sat down next to Lucy.
"I'm really sorry I got you in trouble, but are you okay? Are you hurt?"
Lucy rubbed her wrist where she was held. "I'm a little bruised, but this type of stuff usually happens. People do bad things and then they blame it on me. All I really want to know is why."
Erik lightly grabbed Lucy's wrist. It began to glow. Lucy stared with curiosity.
After a few seconds, Erik let go. The bruise was gone.
Lucy's eyes widened in surprise, "whoa."
Erik sighed. "What an excellent guardian angel I've turned out to be..."
"It's not your fault, don't worry!"
"I really wish I could get you out of this mess..." just as Lucy opened her mouth to say something, Erik added, "which reminds me, you can't grant other angels wishes."
She closed her mouth again.
"Hey kid," the girl said, "who ya talking to?"
"Um... you know... my imaginary friend..." Lucy hoped that would work.
To little surprise, the girl mumbled "typical third graders..." she continued to drink her smoothie.
Just then, a brunette boy walked into the room from the principals door with his head down. He had some red liquid on his sleeve and he was holding a red pen. He looked up and his green eyes met Lucys blue eyes. It was her brother, Cole.
The girl gasped, "Cole, what happened?!"
Without breaking eye contact with his sister, he quickly replied, "it's some paint don't worry about it." Coles voice was very calm though he barely moved. His eyes shifted towards Erik.
Lucy did the same and noticed that his body began to tense.
"So uh... I'll be right back. Lucy I'm gonna give you a pass to go back to class..." he turned around and as he began to open the door, he stopped. "Right so... what exactly are you here for?"
Lucy explained the situation.
Cole nodded as he went back into the principles room and quietly closed the door.
A few moments later, he came back out with a pass. He handed to Lucy.
Lucy sat in mild confusion as her brother and the other girl began to leave. Cole stopped in the doorway. He turned around and gave Lucy a quick hug.
He whispered a few words before quickly leaving as his face turned red. "Please stay out of trouble."
