The day carried on as normal only Lucy was there for the rest of class. She was stil ignored despite having done magic but that was okay with her.
So where friends now, write?!
"Absolutely," Erik replied as he corrected Lucys spelling errors.
Throughout the day, Erik helped Lucy with these tiny little tasks as well as helping with math (and by helping, I really mean flat out giving the answers in some cases). Lucy was just glad to have a friend.
After school, the two of them began to walk home at a leisurely pace.
Cole and Eli quickly sprinted by Erik and Lucy as they were followed by that one girl with red hair.
"Hi Lucy, bye Lucy!" Shouted Eli.
Cole was panting as he ran, "I'm gonna be home later than usual bye!"
"Cole I swear I will kill you!" Said the girl, runnin' like the heccing Flash.
Erik and Lucy both froze at whatever was going on. They laughed.
"Is he usually like that?" Erik asked.
Lucy nodded. "Hehe, kind of. If that girl isn't trying to track him down, it's usually a blond one." Lucy sighed, "I'm honestly not sure what he does to deserve it."
Erik chuckled, "I guess girls are just head over heals for him!"
"Nah," Lucy replied, "he doesn't like girls. Well, not to date. I think." Lucy stopped in her tracks as she looked to the sky, trying to sort out her confusion, "Actually, I think he does like the blonde girl? Now I'm not sure..."
"How strange..."
"Hey Erik, can I ask you two questions?"
"Go ahead."
"Well I just asked one." Clever child... "my other question is, if you're an angel and I know you have wings, where did they go and why do you just walk?"
"Well, those are two very good questions. You see Lucy, when an angel is not using their wings, they disappear. This is so they do not run into things and break stuff. And while flying is indeed faster, I wouldn't be able to talk to you whilst in the air." Erik pointed towards they sky.
Lucy looked up. "Oh yeah, I guess that's true. It's pretty high up, huh?"
After some more small talk, they finally arrived at Lucys house. It was in a small suburban area, the only thing separating this house from others was the one broken window. Lucy isn't quite sure what happened nor why it hasn't been fixed yet.
She hopped up the steps and turned the knob. She sighed. It was locked. But that was okay. It was usually locked. Lucy took out a spare key from her backpack.
"Hey Lucy," Erik said as he followed her in, "can I ask you two questions?"
"Sure," Lucy replied as she walked into the kitchen.
"Well, I just asked one. My other other question is, where is your mother?"
Lucy climbed a kitchen counter and opened the cabinet. "My mother? She's uhhh..." she grabbed a box of pop tarts. "Cole told me once but I forget what it was called. It's the thing Harley Quinn did. She's with one of those."
"Oh, you mean she's with a psychiatrist?"
"Yes, that's what I said. Do you want one?" Lucy handed the box of pop tarts to Erik as she jumped off the counter.
Erik awkwardly accepted the box and took one out. "Why is she with a psychiatrist?"
"Something to do with my dad I think? She got a letter one time and then she started crying a lot and after that she went."
Erik handed back the box, "do you know what was in the letter?"
"Yeah..." Lucy stuffed a pop tart in her mouth. "It was about my dad. It... said he wasn't coming back. He couldn't." Her eyes began to water a little. "I know he's dead. It was in that letter. Mom never told me or Cole or Theo but we still know. But Cole and Theo don't know that I know. Why didn't anyone tell me..." She looked down, not really expecting an answer.
"...Perhaps they just didn't want you to be sad."
"But I still am. And now moms sad too. And Cole and Theo. We're all sad but we keep pretending like we aren't."
"It must have been hard losing you father, but at least he died in battle."
"...But that's not how he died." Lucy was in crying now yet her voice was steady. "He killed himself. The letter said so. I don't know why."
"War is Hell..."
Lucy quickly wiped her tears away and looked up at Erik. "Are you going to leave me too? Everyone else does..."
"N-no Lucy, I would never!" He blushed slightly, being put on the spot.
"You really are my friend!" Lucy jumped up and down, seeming to have forgotten her sadness.
"If you don't mind me asking," Erik said, relieved that Lucy was in a better mood. "Who's Theo and Cole? You mentioned them several times. I recall seeing Cole, but is he your friend?"
"Well, not exactly. Cole is my brother and so is Theo. They don't really hang it together all that much. Theo went to a boarding school after getting into a ton of fights. I don't know why we didn't move with him. So now he's all the way in Boston and we're here. How far is Boston from here, a three hour drive?"
"...Lucy that's nearly a two days drive from here to there."
"Wow, really?"
"Yes. But what of Cole, why isn't he here?"
"Oh yeah, that." Lucy decided to reclaim her box of food. "Well, he's usually with his friend, Eli. They're trying to ban school! Er, something like that. It'd be so cool if it worked, school is awful!"
"But Lucy, education is important!"
"But school doesn't teach us anything!" She quickly stuffed her face with pop tarts. "It teaches us how to hate each other and ourselves."
Erik paused for a moment as he chose his next words carefully. Do you... hate yourself?"
Lucy said nothing.
"Lucy..."
"I don't really hate myself but there's something wrong with me."
"What makes you say that?"
"Well, there has to be something wrong with me! Right? There has to be. No one ever talks to me or wants to be friends with me."
"Well in that case, there's something wrong with me too. Because I think you’re great." Erik smiled kindly at her. He looked at her in a way Lucy thought her father might have too.
"...I still wish I didn't have homework." Lucy finally said in an attempt to cut the tension.
"Are you not in kindergarten, why do you have homework."
"I'm in third grade! And well when I was in kingergarten I still had homework. Uh, speaking of homework... I still need to do mine. Could you help me please?
Erik laughed. "I suppose I can."
~ ~ ~
Lucy had completed her homework by five o clock. Around this time was usually when either Lucys mother or Cole returned. However, neither had. Lucy thought nothing of it. She and Erik talked for hours.
It wasn't until nine o clock, almost Lucys bed time, that Cole came home. Lucy excitedly ran down the stairs to great him.
She hugged him warmly. "Cole why were you gone for so long are you and Elises plans working did you two fight again?!" Lucy noticed that her brothers hair was a mess, and his neck was now covered in bruises and bite marks. For some reason, his shirt was inside out as well.
Coles eyes looked away as his face turned red. "Y-yeah, kind of. Don't worry about it." Lucy suddenly noticed the Tupperware that Cole brought with him. "Here, Eli's mum made these, I'm guessing all you've eaten is the shiii-stuff from school."
Lucy pretended not to notice her brother almost curse as she took the food. She opened and found inside "Pie! Thank you!"
"Yeah. I uh, kinda need to go to bed now. You know how uh fighting make me tired. Yeah let's go with that." He quickly ran up the stairs before Lucy could say another word.
Cole often brought food from Eli's house. Probably because he'd get a guaranteed meal there.
"Does he get into fights often?" Erik said, suddenly regaining Lucys attention.
"Kind of, but only with Eli," Lucy said as she opened the fridge to find milk. "Do you want some pie?"
"Lucy, didn't you eat an entire box of pop tarts, is it really healthy for you to be eating pie now?"
"I'm a small child with a high metabolism I'll be fine."
Erik wondered how she knew what metabolism meant but forgot the word psychiatrist. He disregarded the matter.
A few moments passed and they had finished their pies.
"That was really good~" Lucy said with glee. "Haha. I don't mean to be rude, but I should probably go to bed now."
"Yes, that sounds like a marvelous idea.
Erik bid Lucy a fair well, a goodnight, and a promise to return in the morning.
Nothing could possibly go wrong.
