Xaria walked into the diner, unsure of what to expect. She had emerged from the portal in the alley behind the diner. Humans could only see the portal if the celestial allowed it so being seen wasn’t really a concern. If she wanted to she could emerge in the middle of the diner and none of the humans would notice that she appeared. They would have memories of her walking around the corner and into the diner. That was the beauty of celestial portals. Xaria simply liked to gain her bearings before doing anything else. The trip sometimes left her nauseous, so if she needed to throw up, she preferred to do it in private.
Her wings were retracted into her back, and even if she had them out, no human would see them. Yet another celestial benefit. She was wearing a light blue off-the shoulder dress and ballet flats. Casual but not too casual. One thing she really adored about humans was fashion. She loved dresses and skirts and different outfits. It let her feel like she was changing her identity to a different person
She entered the diner and sat in the booth behind them. She overheard them talking.
“Church was so nice today, I really loved the pastors new sermon,” Elizabeth said.
“Yeah, I agree. More pastors should be open to LGBT people. It’s really affirming to hear that it’s not a sin.”
Hmm, Xaria thought. Maybe these people weren’t half bad. She didn’t feel nearly as terrible about blessing them now. After all, their child would grow up in a loving household.
She sat through their breakfast and ordered human food. Pancakes, waffles, coffee, all new delicacies that she wanted to try. She enjoyed the waffles and pancakes with syrup but the coffee was too bitter. She tried adding syrup just because she could but that made it sickly sweet.
Luckily, the check for her order and the couple’s came at the same time. Except they were switched (all according to plan).
“Honey, I think this is the wrong check!” Elizabeth said. She slid it over to Joshua.
“I think you’re right,” he said. He turned around to face Xaria.
“Excuse me miss, is this your check?”
Xaria craned her neck towards him, feigning surprise.
“Oh, yes it is! Thank you! Bless your heart!” She said, laying her hand on top of his as she took her receipt and handed him his. She put cash on the table and stood up.
“Have a blessed day you two!” she said to the couple.
“Thank you, you too!” Elizabeth replied.
Xaria walked out of the restaurant. One miracle down, one to go. She put her hand on the necklace.
“Can I have a portal please?” She asked, speaking into it. Static crackled on the other line and then a voice came through.
“Sure thing ‘Ria,” Zebadiah replied.
“I fucking hate it when you call me that.”
“I know. That’s why I do it.” A pause. “All set!”
“Thanks Zeb.”
“No problem!”
Xaria shook out her wings and stepped into the second portal of the day.
