A dark shadow slowly loomed over Raven from behind her. Like a fog, it slowly obscured her sight of the red desert around her. Everything started feeling more void as this shadow got darker, steadily hiding any hints of the crimson sand.
She had to run. Break through from this cloud that was suffocating her. Raven took a step-
She woke up in a sweat.
“Again? Really?” She muttered to herself as she heaved heavy breaths, sitting upright on her bed.
A coldness lingered on the back of her neck. It spread to her bare shoulders and the grey tank top she wore seemed invisible. She untangled her blanket from her legs and put it over her shoulders like a cape. Still seated on her bed, Raven opened the window on her right, and saw a dark, cloudy sky. The streets were dim and desolate, birds weren’t screeching yet and not a single soul was awake. She shut it before the cool breeze could come into her room.
Grumbling, Raven grabbed her red alarm clock on her bedside table to her left, squinted at the time it displayed and set it face-down on the tabletop, exasperated.
It was only 04:36, and here she was, wide awake because of a stupid recurring nightmare.
“This is bullshit. On the first day of school, too,” She muttered. Knowing that she wasn’t going to go back to sleep, she got out of bed, leaving behind her soft sheets. She stood and stretched briefly. Slowly, Raven shuffled over to her desk in the corner opposite to her bed. She turned on her desk lamp and its light illuminated the scraps of fabric and scissors that covered the surface of her desk; unfinished work from the night before.
She plopped onto her chair which let out a long creak of complaint as she leaned back to yawn. Immediately, she crossed her legs on the seat and pulled out a mechanical pencil from her pen holder. Raven studied the drawing on her open sketchbook and started scratching out bold zig zags across the draft of a miniskirt she’d drawn yesterday. Raven had a great interest in fashion, and it doesn’t stop, so she didn’t either.
'Today's seriously going to be the first day of school... Damn, I'll miss the holidays.' Thoughts ran across her mind as Raven added legs to the miniskirt and started to doodle some boots. 'I should really go for something that looks dominating, with a whole lot of edge and textures....' She drew details on the ankle-height boots - thick black laces and a chunky heel as she continued envisioning her back-to-school outfit.
The nightmare left Raven's train of thoughts as ideas for the best outfit for school climbed on, making Raven feel more and more excited for school in a few hours.
