A month or so passed after that. Sauos followed us every day to our cave just so we could study in peace. We found no other signs of humans on the surface. But that didn’t stop Sauos from coming with us anyway. It was the only way she would let us leave the academy.
Sighing, I flopped back on my bed. Classes were over for the day and we planned on going back to the cave tonight. Us forfeiting the final match of the tournament was also in my mind. I wanted so much to face the upperclassmen and prove we had what it takes to be the strongest team.
“Silves, how did we ever get ourselves into this mess?” I breathed out, not expecting a reply.
Silves swam over to lightly sit on my bed next to me.
“Well, The book found us, if we hadn't stayed out late and saw humans we would still be free to go out on our own,” He trailed off when I gave him a face.
“Saous, should be here any minute to escort us.”
A knock came to the door.
“Boys, are you ready to go?”
“Yeah” We both called.
We came out at the same time and I closed the door behind us.
“Where’s the book?” Saous questioned, wondering if Silves had forgotten to bring it.
“We are going to be working on my cold resistance today. If I'm going to be the one to protect Silves then I need to get used to the effects of his magic.”
------
“Take it down another 5 degrees.” I yelled to Silves, who was sitting on a rock just trying to concentrate on keeping the temperature steady.
The temperature had dropped down to 50 degrees and was about to be at 45. My trident was swinging around at a normal pace, not as fast as I would have liked, but it was a start. Several minutes after that my body was starting to succumb to the effect of the water being too cold.
“Ok, Why don’t we take a break for now”
Silves slowly raised the temperature. Putting away My trident, and swimming back to Silves, I sat next to him on the rock.
“That was great” I flashed him a smile, while I warmed up.
“You weren’t too bad yourself, though I think we took it a little too far this time.” He took my hand, grabbing on to it, to feel how cold it was.
“Nonsense, I stopped before it got too much to handle.” The fact that my body was still shivering told him otherwise.
He latched on to me, enveloping me into a hug. Trying to warm me up with the heat from his own body.
“Echo I,”
The words he was about to say were cut off by a huge flash of light. I instantly grabbed the trident of inside of my ring. Silves held on to me tighter, burying his face in my chest.
“Who goes there?” My voice was strong and firm, trying to deter anyone foolish enough to attack us. Though with as bright as the light had been Saous would be here any second to see what was going on.
The light dissipated as quickly as it had come. The book, that was supposed to be in our room, was floating before us. Its pages turned rapidly, till they stopped. I put my trident away again, and motioned for Silves to look.
Landfolk, otherwise known as Humans. Was the title to the page. We started to read the page, when Slives touched it. His stare went blank and his body jerked. This happened the last time he had a vision.
‘Guardian of the Oracle, I sense the Landfolk you need to seek nearby.’
Silves hand came up to grab my arm. It latched onto me tightly. I was pulled in to wherever the vision had taken him.
We both jerked back to reality. Our eyes came back into focus, and we gasped for breath. The book floated to Silves lap, staying on the page it flipped open to. I remembered everything we had seen.
About a King and his people, who hungered for more that they had. Cracking the world stone in search of power and all the magic to claim for themselves. And a boy with black hair that would right the wrongs of his people.
“Are you two alright?, I came as soon as the light flashed.” Saous looked ready to kill, or at least severely harm whatever she thought was going to attack us.
“Yeah, I think so,”
Both Silves and I shook our heads. I had never shared a vision with him before.
A noise pierced the water. It was loud, obnoxious, and sounded whiney. Hands closed around my ears. If I had to listen to it any longer, I might have just put an end to whatever made it.
"You boys stay here, I'm going to check to see if there is danger." Saous motioned for us to stay where we were.
"Tell me what you find," I called back to her.
She gasped coming back to us quickly.
"We need to leave, it's a bunch of humans"
“Did one of them have black hair?”
“yes, but that shouldn’t matter to you, we should get out of here”
Saous was trying to move us out of the cave and back to the academy. Silves had other plans. He swam closer to the surface just to peek his head above water.
"It looks like the boy from our vision"
"Let me go up to him first. I don't want to put you in any danger. Saous we need to talk to the boy, the fate of the world depends on it."
With my trident at the ready, I swam ahead of Silves. Peeking my head out first. My trident stayed underwater, as well as Saous just in case anything were to happen.
There he was standing like he was the greatest thing the world has ever seen. His hair was chin-length and came out of the top of his head in waves. His skin was tanned and his eyes were a dark sapphire blue. There was another boy standing next to him. His hair was also black but much shorter than the first boy’s was. His skin was paler, and his eyes were a light shade of coral. The second boy didn’t stand as tall as the first, he looked meek and shy. His fingers were curled around a book. The second boy almost reminded me of Silves in a way.
“Who are you? What are you called?” I blurted out, not even realizing whether they could understand me or not.
My voice startled the first boy and drew their attention towards me. The First boy opened his mouth, and that loud unbearable noise came back hurting my ears. Gibberish, it was all just gibberish as to what he was trying to say.
The book in Silves hand and the book in the second boy hand came flying into the air. They opened at the same moment and energy flashed between them.
“How dare you cover your ears, foolish creatures. I am the great Prince Raoul. You should be grateful just to be in my presence.” Silves and I could now understand that awful sound coming from him. Though I wished I hadn't.
“Are you your oracle’s guardian?” Silves questioned to the one who called himself Raoul.
“No, stupid, I am the Oracle.” Raoul pointed to himself then started to laugh. “You thought that a lowly servant boy would be lucky enough to be chosen for such a high honor as this.”
The other boy just stood next to Raoul, like what he said meant nothing. I was already annoyed by the way Raoul talked, and now the way he treated others got to me even more.
“And you,” Raoul turned to the Shy boy that was with him. “Why didn’t you introduce me properly?” His voice was filled with anger. His hand came up and slapped the other boys face so hard he fell to the ground.
“Get up!” But before the other boy could Raoul picked him off the ground and threw him into the water.
The Shy boy started to thrash about in the water like he couldn’t swim. Silves swam over to him instantly to help him, trying to keep him afloat.
“You should just let him drown, It doesn't matter to me whether he lives or dies.”
Something In me snapped, I couldn’t watch the ill-treatment of this boy any longer. My trident was above water pointed at Raoul.
“ENOUGH!” The blood in my skin boiled. “How dare you treat him like that.”
Not only did my blood boil, but the water around me started to as well. Fire raged in my eyes. An energy so powerful formed within me that I spang form the water. The metal on the end of my Trident heated up almost becoming molten. The hot metal smacked Raoul in the face. I could hear the sizzling of flesh being burned, before landing back in the water.
Raoul covered the side of his face, screaming in pain. He deserved every ounce that he got. I helped silves return the other boy to land.
The sounds of footsteps and clanking metal alerted us we weren't about to be alone. I grabbed Silves by his tail and pulled him underwater so we could flea.
Letting go of Silves, we swam back to the academy as fast as we could, With Saous in front of us. The thought occurred to me that she never once interfered. Which was strange. Silves and I both played on my bed. he was curled up to me, my hands were running through his hair rapidly.
“That Bastard” Anger still coursed through me. When I thought about what happened to the Boy with coral eyes.
“Orin,” Silves said out loud.
Confusion took my face.
“Silves, what are you talking about?”
“The land oracle’s name is Orin”
