That night Stewart slipped out of his bathroom with damp curls and a cool towel over his head. He sat down in front of the TV in his room and picked up his gaming controller. Before he turned on the console, he turned his head to look out the sliding door that gave way to a small porch.
He waited for a few minutes, anticipating that his phone would vibrate soon. Usually, when his phone notified him of a message, it was because Dean was going to appear on the banister. Stewart could picture it now–the boy hopping over the railing to open the sliding glass door with a cheeky smile on his face.
The teen hadn’t done that since their sophomore year, however, and Stewart knew that by now that the chances of Dean popping up had diminished. He pulled a pack of cookies closer to him and turned on his console to enjoy a 2D RPG game. In the third level of the game his phone buzzed, catching him by surprise and making his screen flash Game Over.
Stewart ignored his loss in favor of looking over at the sliding doors. When there was no sight of a cheeky boy with twigs in his hair, he sighed in defeat. With a hand reaching for his phone he unlocked the screen to reveal a text from Riggs.
<< Ayyyyy ooh!” >>
Stewart let out a soft chuckle at the text and replied.
<< Ayyyyy oooh! >>
<< Ayy Ooh! >>
<< Ayy Ooh! >>
<< Aaaayyy ooh >>
<< Aaaayyy ooh >>

Stewart laughed out loud and shook his head.
<< I should’ve never introduced you to Queen>>
<<a “ur welcome” is good enough>>

<< I think i like jmh B) >>

<< hey… >>
<< Yeah? >>
<< i know we dont hang much >>
<< u sure u wanna come to the fair with me >>
<< i get if you dont. >>
Stewart paused his game again and tilted his head, analyzing the text. He arched a brow and smiled at the screen. He admired how nice Riggs had always been; he was like the puppy of their small group.
<< Dude, we’re friends. Going to the fair with you isn’t that serious. >>
The teen waited for a reply and continued playing his game.
<< sorry >>
<< thought krak died >>
Stewart began multitasking between gaming and texting his friend once more.
<< I advise you against calling Kraken krak rofl >>

<< Geez! Here I thought you were mature! >>

<< There goes my heart :’( >>
<< Oh what do you know I’m free again. >>
<< Who’s to say I’m still free? >>
<< stewart! >>
<< Stewart is a noun. >>
<< y are you always meanest to me? >>
<< does Dean get this much salt? >>
Stewart paused his game again, curious as to why Dean was brought up. Then he wondered if he teased him this much. He blushed since it was usually the other way around and he’d always be the one getting teased. It was the exact reason he knew he and Dean were just best friends.
<< Nah. >>
More time passed between the text and Riggs’ next response. Stewart was about to unpause the game until he received yet another notification.
<< Let’s hang before our manly date. >>
The teen snorted, trying to hold in his laughter, “What an interesting way to say hangout.”
<< Sure lol. I don’t work tomorrow. >>
<< cool, cool >>
<< let’s get ice cream by the lake >>
<< Sounds like the perfect manly date. >>
<< im blushing. >>
<< Okay Riggs xD >>
<< i am! >>
<< okay xD >>
<< ill stop by urs at 5? >>
<< kk >>
<< kk :3 >>
<< I’m gonna sleep then >>
<< lol kk, night Riggs. >>
<< Night, Beautiful. >>
Stewart froze. He reread the text. Once. Twice. Six times. Ten times, before blinking rapidly.
“What?” he mumbled to himself, and then he whisper-yelled into his pillow over the sound of Legend of Green Knight’s Lost Stones.
