Poking my head out the kitchen door, I signed to Shae that the tarts were ready. Nodding, she gave me a grin back. Turning back to the kitchen, I grabbed the tray of tarts and walked to the store front. As I was putting the tarts in the case of goods, someone ran up behind me and tugged on my shirt. Turning around, I saw a familiar face. The face belonged to Shae’s daughter, Amelia. She had taken a liking to me since I moved to the village.
“Milo! Milo! You’ll never guess what happened at school today! You wanna know? Do ya, do ya?” After I set down the pan of tarts, I picked her up and nodded energetically to show I wanted to know. “I made a new friend today!” Amelia boasted. I gave her a look of admiration to the best of my abilities, with having only one eye visible to others. I then gave her a tight hug and set her down just as Shae walked over.
“Amelia, we’ve talked about bothering Milo while he’s working” I waved my hands, trying to say that she wasn’t bothering me.
“Aww, but mommy! I’m not bothering Uncle Milo, right Uncle Milo?” She turned to me while I shook my head, trying to suppress the pride of being called
“Uncle Milo”. Shae looked at me, Amelia, then back at me. “Alright, but make sure Uncle Milo can get back to work.” Shae walked away then. Amelia gave me a quick hug then ran after her mom.
Walking back to the kitchen, I got back to the bread, taking it out of the oven, the smell was so warm and comforting I couldn’t help but close my eyes and drift away. The rest of the day was pretty standard. I stayed in the kitchen, popping out to the front every now and then to put out pastries and greet some people. When the workday ended, I wrapped up the bread dough I was preparing and started to clean up the kitchen.
