Being the lowest-ranking master sure had its disadvantages, old man Zanhui lamented silently to himself. Like, when one of the other masters ask you to perform a task, you have no choice but to agree. Saying ‘no’ is, of course, possible, but no one wanted to make an enemy out of a monster like existence.
The task of apprehending a demon fell on Zanhui Yu in the end. Thinking back, old-man Zanhui didn’t know why he believed that the other masters were going to help him. Each of them was a self-entitled prick, with an emotional range of a goldfish.
The demons appeared in his region quite frequently, but it could take some time until another demon was going to try, and they had their own problems, or so they said.
“Old-man Zanhui, why don’t you catch one of the invading demons for us? You handled them on your own until now, so it’s not like you need our help, right?”
Zanhui gritted his teeth in frustration. Beating a demon and capturing a demon alive are two different things! Yet, he swallowed his words and didn’t make a fuss. That was three hours ago.
It takes Zanhui three hours to get back to his sect and three hours to regret not saying anything because the moment he got back, he was caught in a fight.
Seven of his best disciples against one demon and his disciples were losing.
‘Don’t need your help, my ass!’ Zanhui cursed as the demon threw a large energy ball towards one of his disciples.
Zanhui directed his sword - Bai Bing, to block the blow.
Bai Bing is a mighty sword, forged in the heat of a raging volcano. Its’ speed is unparalleled, so it flew from underneath Zanhui’s feet to protect his students in a few seconds.
Zanhui fell down with nothing to hold him up, something which the demon used to his full advantage. The demon launched six energy balls, each in a different color.
Before the first energy ball could hit the old-looking master, Zanhui used his Kii to form two pairs of gold wings on his back and halted his fall. The first ball passed inches away from the groin area before hit a nearby mountain with a loud and colorful boom.
The rest of the energy balls curved up in an attempt to catch up to the flying cultivator, but old-man Zanhui wasn’t a master for nothing. After battling all kinds of demons, he’d learned all sorts of helpful tricks.
It didn’t take long for Zanhui to create five Kii-balls of his own and send them at the energy-balls chasing after him. The moment the Kii-balls hit the energy-balls, they exploded, and colorful smoke filled the air.
“Don’t breathe in!” Ordered Zanhui before he formed a Kii-bubble around his body.
“Yes!”
Zanhui turned towards the demon and sized him up. It was a humanoid demon with light grey hair and black triangle eyes. Its’ clothes looked strange, and Zanhui had a suspicion that it was some kind of uniform.
“Those marking on your face, aren’t you a demon guard?” Zanhui asked the other calmly.
“…” The demon kept quiet. It didn’t nod or shake his head, but instead, it charged an attack. Zanhui was almost certain by this point that the demon in front of him was a demon guard.
‘What’s a guard of the demonic royal family doing in the human world?’
The obvious answer was: looking for a member of the royal family. No, Zanhui couldn’t jump to conclusions just yet. For a royal demon to pass through the barrier between the realms is unheard of. There could be another reason, one that he hadn’t thought of.
‘At least, I hope…’
An energy ball passed inches away from his face, and once it hit a nearby mountain, it started shrinking until it could no longer be seen.
It appears that those energy balls are a lot more troublesome than they first appeared. Zanhui cursed the other masters in his heart but prepared for a tough fight.
