The Gemini Effect

In the Dawn

In the Dawn

Feb 21, 2020

Wyatt sat there alone, twiddling with his thumbs on the cold steel table set before him that matched the temperature in the room. The chair he sat in wasn't any different. He wiped the tears that rolled down his cheek to hide his emotion that shed in the silence. His feelings were tumbling around inside him, like they had all been thrown into the dryer. Anger, sadness, confusion. How could this happen? He thought. Were they really dead?

From movies he had seen, this room was exactly what he'd pictured it'd be. A small, cold, eight by ten square foot room that had a large two way mirror embedded in the west wall. Nothing else. Though he was spot on with his predictions of what this room would look like and how it would make him feel, Wyatt never thought he'd actually ever have to be in one-- but here he was.

All he could think about was the conversation he last held with his parents, their words echoing endlessly off the walls of his mind. There are dangers to this family you know nothing about. The last words of his father he remembered that stood out the most. Could this have been what he meant? What could have happened? The questions only made him more emotional, and they just kept coming. Why did I leave them? I should've just stayed. The longer he was left to himself, the harder it hit him.

After what felt like forever, someone finally came through the door. Wyatt wiped his face and straightened himself out as he looked up to meet their face. It was woman. She had blonde hair that was pulled back into a ponytail. The badge dangling around her neck read 'Sheriff' but it was her strict attire that gave away her title. She sat in the seat across the table from Wyatt, placing a folder filled with papers before her. She gave him a profiling look, analyzing his classification based on his features alone. It was an intense glare that made Wyatt more than uncomfortable.

"You don't look like a killer," the sheriff began, eyes now scanning Wyatt for body language. "Tell me, Wyatt Witcher, where you were in the past three hours?"

Wyatt scoffed in disbelief. Already he saw the direction this interrogation was heading towards. Did she really want to come in here so strong? Wyatt was many things, but someone who backed down wasn't one of them. He was a fighter and already he had to tighten the gloves.

"I was with my girlfriend, at the Old City Diner in town," he looked her directly in the eyes to let her know that he would not cave to her scare tactic. "We were supposed to be having dinner--"

"Dinner?" she repeated suspiciously, tipping her penciled in eyebrow, high in his direction. "But I thought you were supposed to be having dinner with your parents?" she looked down at the folder full of papers, pulling one out and reading from it, "Isn't that what you told officer Frank?"

"Listen lady," he began to get annoyed of her accusing tone, snickering sarcastically, "I don't care what you think, or what you've lead yourself to already believe, but I didn't kill my parents. You can ask my girlfriend or anyone who worked at the diner tonight where I was--"

"Then why," she pulled out another paper from her folder, a picture of him and Cassandra sitting in his car from the cameras at the gate, "Were you the last person to be seen leaving the crime scene, moments before they were murdered?"

"What...?" Wyatt was taken by surprise to hear that his parents were killed right after he left.

"And if that's your girlfriend, there in the front seat," she points to Cassandra in the picture laid out on the table, "Do you really think we'd take her word for it? For all we know, she could be your accomplice--"

"We didn't kill my parents," Wyatt growled, but now he realized that she could be caught up in this too. "And I'm done speaking to you. I want a lawyer--"

"Good, because you're going to need one--"

The Sheriff gathered her papers back into her folder and walked out of the room with nothing left in her power to do. Wyatt was escorted out to the nearest pay phone where he immediately called Cassandra for his one and only phone call.

"Hello...?" she answered groggily, as if she had been sleeping. Wyatt looked around for a clock seeing it were midnight. Shit. He thought to himself. Had he really been here that long?

"Babe--"

"Wyatt??" she came to her senses, "Where the hell are you?? I've been calling you for hours. Who's phone is this--??"

"Cassandra listen to me, I'm at the police station and I need you to find Vidian--"

"What? What happened?? What's going on??"

"M-my parents are dead," his voice cracked under the pressure, letting his walls down in the one place he knew he could. "They were murdered, in our house. I don't know what happened to Vidian. I asked the officer who arrested me and he said only two bodies were found at the crime scene. Vidian is the only one who could contact our family lawyer and get me out of this mess, I need you to find him--"

"Oh my god..." she fell off the end of her line, silent in awe. Hearing him cry made her eyes water. In just his voice, there was so much emotion.

"Babe please, I need you to do this for me. The sheriff thinks we're guilty and she already has it out for the both of us--"

Panic began to set in for her, "W-what do you mean?" she took a deep breath, letting it all in. "Where would I even start? I-I mean, does Vidian ever even go anywhere? I-I don't think I've ever seen him leave the estate before--"

"I-I don't know, but when I talked to my parents earlier today, my father said that there were dangers to my family that I knew nothing about. I think this is what he was talking about. Something about this doesn't feel right. I need to know what happened to them. Vidian would know or have a better idea if I could get a hold of him--"

"I-I'll find him, I-I promise," Cassandra pulled her emotions together, "I don't know how b-but I'll do it I swear--"

"I love you, and when you find him you tell him everything. He'll know exactly what to do," Wyatt wiped the tears streaming down his face, "But be careful. If they catch you at my house the sheriff will definitely want a word with you--"

"Alright," she took a deep breath to brace herself, "I-I love you too. Don't get too comfortable in there--"

Cassandra waited for Wyatt to hang up the phone, before drowning herself in the loud silence that now filled her empty room. Where would she even start to look for Vidian? Was only one of the questions roaming the walls of her mind. She hopped out of bed and rummaged through he closet till she found Wyatt's hoodie. She quickly slid it over her back and ran out the front door with her mothers keys.

The only place she had in mind was Wyatt's parents estate. The only answer she had to ever question. The only way every train of thought ended. She sat in the drivers seat of her mothers Jeep gripping the steering wheel tightly in contemplation. She could go to Wyatt's place. But who was to say the cops weren't still there? And if they were, how was she supposed to get passed them? She shook her head, roaring the engine and driving off. There was only one way to find out.
