"So, are you ready, Ty? We need to keep moving. It almost night. We needed a place to sleep." He nodded.
"I'm okay. Let's keep moving." He pushed himself forward and I carried him on my back. Again. Well, it can't be helped.
"If we're gonna do this, you need to tell me there's zombie or anything, okay? Because I can't move my head or respond very fast." Tyler responded quickly. It seems he caught on what i'm saying. But he pat my shoulders gently and I turned to him.
"It seemed like Andrew is in the 9th floor."
"9th floor it is then." I carried him and ran towards the stairs. It seems easy at first but it was very tiring. Tyler was light but it was different when you tried to carry 25 kilos weight on your back. Not to mention, his bag was very much heavy. What did he bring anyway? I pushed myself harder and finally, we made it. I put him down and I panted heavily.
"We— finally made it."
"It took awhile, though." He mumbled.
"What did you say, Ty?" I turned towards him, he gulped.
"It's nothing, Rere." He sweatdropped and I sighed. Did he try to lighten the mood or something? Well, atleast it was something, better than nothing.
"It doesn't matter. Let's get going. Andrew must've been tired of waiting." I replied, he sighed in relief. We walked for a moment and reached the floor where Andrew was. We looked around and saw Andrew with someone. Is it someone he know?
"Andrew!" He turned around, followed by her. A woman wearing white robe. She seems like a scientist of this company. Wait, scientist? I ran towards them fast, Tyler confused with my action but he still hold on tighter, trying not to fall down.
"Are you--" Andrew stopped me. He explained everything. Experiment, and any information from her. It shocked me. Well, not as much as Tyler.
"That means, I will stuck with this forever?"
"Correct. It is unfortunate." He held his tears back. I know it hurts him but I believe there's a way for Tyler to not be burdened by the sensors.
"Is there any way for him to recovered?"
"Recover? No. It is implanted inside his brains. If we don't know what is the component of the sensors and the exact location on where it is inside his brains, I can assure you that it is suicide to go on." I tried to argue but it is pointless. She countered it everytime. Well... it is her field of expertise after all. Of course, I can't argue.
"But, I can lessen his pain. He said that it hurts when there's a zombie. Then, there's two ways. One, kills all zombies around the city or two, you can wear headphones." Eh? Headphones? Can it really help my brother?
"It will do. For now." She assured me, but where the heck can we find it? Then, as soon as she saw me deep in thought, she offered me a headphone. It was the perfect size as him. I guess it belongs to the victim of the virus.
"Here, Ty. Wear this for now. Tell me if it helps." He took it and wear it around his neck. I told them we need to reach the last floor before it's dark. She agreed and we exited the stairs onto the highest floor of the building. She led us to a door. Director's office. She opened it and we were fortunate that the door was unlocked. The office was quite dark but we turned the flashlight on and relax a little. Lucky was an understatement. I noticed she glance down at the papers. She look through every room and it was surprisingly clean. Except for the papers. It seemed like they left in a hurry or trying to secure a file they were looking for.
"The office is clear. The bedroom too. I highly suggest we get some rest, though that extends to all of you." She looked at me and Tyler as she said that. She left the office and checked the other rooms. Maybe for a clue or something.
"She's so calm." Tyler, unknowingly asked.
"What do you expect, Ty? She already knew about the experiment, of course, she would-- wait, she never come to this office before. Where would she sleep?" Andrew asked. He ran out and tried to find her. He turned right to saw her rummaging through any remains of the other office. To be exact, vice director office.
"Hey, Linda. The apocalypse has been happening for 4 days. And it looks like you never even went to this floor. Care to explain it to me?" She shrugged and answered. "I lived in my labs. I already prepare food and anything beforehand but it's not like I don't trust you all. It's just my lab was messy. A habit of mine and it's embarassing." Tyler and me finally caught up to them. We looked at her and thought, is she really okay?
"So, that's why." I returned to the office with Tyler following behind me. We walked into the bedroom, and looked around. The room was pretty big and what surprise me, it was in director office. What company bring a bed on his office? No, that's not right. What director build a bedroom in his office. On the nightstand next to the bed was a picture of a man and who he presumed to be the man's wife and child. I reached over and put the frame down, as Tyler sat on the bed.
I took off my jacket and grimaced, wishing so badly to take a shower, Tyler too. I noticed he took off his sweat soaked sweatshirt and complained about how he smelled. I ignored him and just laid down on the bed and closed my eyes. I was exhausted and was out within seconds.
"Rere, do you think I should take a bath or not?" Tyler waited for a reply and looked back at Rere. "Sleeping already?" Tyler sighed, "Well, might as well go to sleep..."
Late at night, Andrew still scouted out another room and Linda... occupying the couch. He wanted to check her labs but he guessed, might as well tomorrow. He found a file that he got on the vice director office. A map and evacuation guide. It talked about specific evacuation points. He had to find a path for them to follow, somewhere not so densely populated with zombie or lotters for that matter. He knew that's where they will go next, he knew that his family can wait. For Tyler.
He hated to admit it, but he was beginning to get a little attached to them, and he did want to try and help them out... Rere stamina were amazing, and Tyler was useful in detecting zombie. He didn't know about Linda, but at least she can provide him with intel on this company and about Tyler condition, if nothing else.
He suddenly spotted an area he assumed the main office they could go towards, but it was quite a distance away. They would be walking for at least two days minimum, but it was their best chance.
"We'll set out early tomorrow morning," He mumbled, rubbing his eyes. With that done, he went to the couch, and laid down on it, closing his eyes from the exhausting day he had. It was best if he didn't think of what the next day would be like, he decided, since he knew it was probably going to be just as bad, or perhaps worse than the day he already experienced.
This was their new life, and he supposed he ought to get used to it as soon as possible.
