Arthur's knights of the round table would be bound in an eternal war, one that would never really find an end. True peace, but not just for their people .. it would be peace for my people as well. Something to look forward to I suppose.
Times changed around me, for years I watched from Avalon as the fae enslaved the other races of the realm, turned truth into lies, and twisted what we once were. We went from simple tribes to warlords. I looked to the scroll, to the rhymes and strange wording to find clues that might help.
The Order of Merrodyn, was formed when I found the answer... Merlin. The order watches over him from the shadows, one born of both demon and fae blood, destined to fail time and time again, to be pushed down and have to rise from the ashes. The first to bare the name Merlin broke his chains, and the chains of many others before disappearing from the realm.
The second, a twisted creation, too power hungry, too much of the beastial hunger for more. This one, however, is the one my scrolls talked of the most often. Arthur's mentor, the sage of camelot. It was amusing to watch from the sidelines ... until the horrifying moment that he seduced my sister and many from Avalon away.
It was in this second life that I passed a portion of the scroll to my hand in the Order of Merrodyn. Revenant, a demon, came to the gates of Avalon. The scroll was for their eyes only, a bit of prophecy that he was to flesh out. My portion of the prophecy said that he would be the father of someone important, a knight unlike any other.
I watched from the well of knowledge as Revenant revealed parts of prophecy to key members in the organization that I had started. I watched as a human took interest in him but was taken away by a fae wielding words like the finest blade.
My anger, I am not proud of it, cut ribbons through the sky, a beast came forth from the lands and went after the fae that I felt had wronged my friend. Magic cast in anger is harder to kill than any other magic, emotions make it stronger. I was too late to stopper the magic that sprang forth and eventually slayed one of Arthur's trusted knights.
Revenant came to me, he knew my magic, knew it was against the rules for me to interfere, but he said that I would again, that his scroll said that I would. We enjoyed time together on Avalon, we greeted fallen knights together at the gates and returned them to the fold of the human realm.
Revenant enjoyed that they feared him and all tried to fight him to get through the gates to this heaven place. I was torn as I knew that Merlin had twisted rituals together, torn from memories that were not his own. My mutterings on Merlin prompted Revenant to tell me that this Merlin would not be the last.
"Merrodyn will rise from the ashes again, the servant and the sun his guide to a better tomorrow. The knights shall rise and fall and rise again and again, and all will know when the once and future king returns that the truth of peace is on the horizon"
He spoke part of him scroll to me, and I carry the words in my heart, as I carried his child. A child that I must abandon within the realm, for children are not allowed on Avalon, and I am bound to be here until a noble cause releases me to the realm of men. So sayeth the scroll ...
