"Hey, it's good to see you!" Said Sven.
Esther's mother did her best to smile. "It's good to see you as well. I can't believe it's been a year already..."
Sven sighed. "Me neither, I still think everyday about her... But let's go inside, Ellá wants to see you as well."
She came out of the kitchen with a couple glasses of milk and put them down on the table. She smiled at Esther's mom and gave her a hug. "It's good to see you miss Sjöberg. I hope you are feeling okay?"
She nodded. "It's difficult of course... This day brings up unpleasant memories. But you know, in the end, Esther did what she wanted to do... And I find peace in that."
The three of them took place at the table and remained quiet for a moment. "Well, who shall begin?" Said Sven.
Ellá looked at him. "Is it okay if I start?"
He nodded. "Go ahead, dear."
She readied her voice. "Esther always meant so much for me. I've known her since kindergarten and we've been friends ever since. When you had a problem, you could always go to Esther and she would listen and give you a hug. And honestly, that's all I needed. When the war came... Life suddenly became a lot more difficult for Esther. But she never gave up and did what she had to do. Even if it meant leaving her precious town behind. Esther continued to support me until the very end and without her, I would never have met Sven who means so much to me. In the beginning, I felt confused. What would Esther think about me loving her friend and crush? But as time progressed, I knew it: Esther would be okay with it. She would be happy for me. Because that's who Esther was. She always wanted the best for everyone."
Sven smiled to Ellá and gave her a hand.
"Thank you, Ellá. I'll go next. I didn't know Esther for a long period of time, just for a few months. But she has meant more than anyone in my life, honestly. If it hadn't been for her, I would have missed out on life and still be alone in my home in Arjeplog... Mourning the loss of my ex wife. But Esther got me out of there and learned me to take action and taught me about kindness and being there for others. After all that happened, I can't thank her enough. Esther might be gone... But her lessons and vision will live on within me. I will never forget her."
Esther's mother did her best to smile. "Thank you both for your kind words. Now it's my turn... Esther was the only child I had. But she made up for it. She had always been very active. Running in the woods, climbing up trees. I constantly had to watch her back. Eventually, she turned to books instead of the outside and went studying in Luleå. I missed her so much during that period... But she came back with new knowledge and a new vision. She wanted to help others out and for a while it seemed like she would be able to do that... Then the war came and things changed drastically. Suddenly, Esther had to leave Jokkmokk behind and live as a scavenger. It was hard for her, but she always remained courageous and did what she had to do. I admire her so much for that. And even though she was forced to live as a scavenger, she still helped people out. She was always there for Ellá when she was home and then one time she brought home a strange man... I didn't know what to think of it. But I knew Esther made the right choice by bringing you here, Sven. This is where you belong... When Esther passed away on that day, I was heartbroken... And when you and Ellá started to live together and eventually became a couple, I was enraged and bitter. But eventually it came to me, this is just how Esther would have wanted it. Esther always wanted the best for everyone and that meant the best for you two as well."
After they were done talking, they held a minute of silence and gave each other a hug. Then they walked outside, to the old museum.
There was a huge crowd and all chairmen were assembled. The chairman of the Sami parliament held a speech.
"Today we remember one of the bravest women in Jokkmokk, who died tragically a year ago. Her condition might have hindered her, but she always tried to be there for everyone. She brought Sven Karlsson, the current charman of the Forestry Union, to here and when a mission to rescue refugees became available, she didn't hesitate for one second... It became her death, yet her spirit lives on in all of us. Sleep well, Esther. The commune will remember you for your services."
After the speech, a local band played "Under Blågul Fana", on the request of Sven. Eventually, the crowed went away and only Ellá, Sven and Esther's mother remained. Together, they went to Jokkmokk's church and held hands as they stood before the memorial of her.
"Here we remember Esther Sjöberg. The Lone Scavenger."
