“I told you it was a date.”
Stewart was laying on his couch, face deep into a pillow that welcomed his sorrows. “Yes, Emely,” Spoke his muffled voice, “you’ve announced this several times.”
When the teen had gotten home the look on his face said everything; not that he’d agree with that, of course. With a warm feeling at the tip of his ears and that tingling feeling on his cheeks, he couldn’t stop thinking of the look Riggs had on his face. And today, two days later, he still couldn’t shake it off.
“Whose date?” Spoke his older brother as he walked into the room. Stewart could hear the sound of, probably, an apple being bitten. He sat up and stared at his brother who was wearing his police uniform.
“No one’s date.”
“Stewart’s date.”
The teen spoke at the same time as his sister. Her answer made him glare at her.
“You went on a date?” Emett answered.
Stewart sighed, “I didn’t know it was a date until the end.” He frowned at his brother. “What do I do?”
The man stared at his younger sibling and hopped over the back of the couch to sit next to him. “Well.” That was it. Then some chewing, then a hum, which actually came from Emely turning on the fan.
Stewart arched a brow, “I think this is the part where you advise me.”
“Right, right. Sorry, just,” he turned his gaze back to his brother, “I never saw this coming with you.”
The teen punched his brother on the shoulder as his sister bent over laughing.
“Seriously?”
His brother whined, but laughed as he rubbed his shoulder. “I didn’t think Riggs was serious about going on a date with you. I thought it was just a Riggs thing.”
Stewart’s eyes widened, “Right?! So did I!”
“So what made you change your mind?”
“You’re both idiots.” Emely muttered, before turning her attention back to her video game.
Stewart felt that tingling feeling on his cheeks again and Emett gaped, “Wow, you’re blushing.”
Stewart grabbed the pillow and shoved his face back into it. “He looked at me funny,” came his muffled voice.
“Sorry, what?”
The teen tried again, but his voice just came out too soft.
Emett snatched the pillow away from the younger, “What happened?”
“He looked at me funny! And then he said he was crushing on me.” He couldn’t look at his brother, not with his red face. He didn’t hear anything come from the other’s voice, until finally Emett nursed out a coo.
“Awww, that’s so cute. So are you two a thing now?”
“Accidental date, Emy. Emphasis on the accidental.”
“Okay, then what have you guys done since?”
“Nothing,” the teen stared at his brother, “I’ve been avoiding his texts.”
“Aww, Stewart. That’s not really the best course of action. And before you blame it on your anxiety, anxiety isn’t an excuse. It may be a reason, but not an excuse. You gotta work up to it and reply to his texts. Did you at least say no? Or yes? What do you want?”
There lied the problem. Stewart had no idea what he wanted. The date was an accident, but it was an accident the teen enjoyed. He couldn’t remember the last time he had so much fun with someone. He wouldn’t say he had a crush on Riggs, but he wouldn’t mind spending time alone with him again.
His brother could read the look on his face and sighed. “What’s stopping you?”
“I,” he paused treading carefully, “have a crush on someone else.”
Before Emett could even finish the question of who, Emely enounced the name to the room, “Dean.”
Stewart glared at his sister and begrudgingly confirmed the answer to his brother.
“You guys don’t hang out as much lately right?” Emett continued once getting a nod, “Why do you like Dean?”
Stewart froze. Never truly thinking of why, but more so the do part of it all. In truth, he did not have an answer for his brother. He liked Dean, because he was Dean. Childhood friend, and present crush.
“I think you need to actually think about what you want. Instead of avoiding Riggs, consider just seeing him. You don’t have to be official to date him. Or as you kids say these days be in the state of, ‘just talking’. Decide what you want first. Judging your face every time he’s mentioned, I don’t think you had such a bad time.”
He hadn’t. It had been amazing, and if his heart could beat any faster it would.
