The rough landing jostled them both awake. Their eyes widening and their muscles tensing, pulling each other closer in.
Alyssa had apparently also been sleeping because she let out a little scream and then quickly covered her mouth.
She looked at the men next to her, and slowly, seemingly reluctantly, they peeled off each other.
“You two got scared too huh?” She said, assuming the obvious from their position.
She felt reassured that the men, these officers of the law, had held onto each other for dear life in fear and anticipation as their plane bumped and jumped and skidded to a landing.
It made her feel better about her own fears of flying. At least she wasn’t alone.
As the plane drove around the tarmac for what felt like an hour, Joey shifted in his seat, anxious to get off already.
The armrest separating him and Mikael was still up so he leaned his body against Mikael's, resting his head on Mikale's shoulder as he looked out the window.
Mikael pulled out his phone to check in with their team and let them know he and Joey had landed safely. He also confirmed everything was set, their ride, the check-in at the hotel, ect.
One of the perks of having a control freak as a friend, Joey had realized early on, was not really having to worry about any of the details yourself.
As much as he liked pulling Mikael's leg, he knew he could always count on him, even when he made brash impulsive decisions-that were normally more thought out than most people assumed.
Thanks to most of him being on Mikael's seat, Joey was able to bring up one of his knees close to his chest and rest his arm on it. He listened to Mikael fill him in on how their team was doing as he looked out the window while they taxied around the tarmac.
“Oh. Here.” Alyssa said after Mikael had finished pulling out two carry-ons from the overhead bin.
Mikael stared at the paper she was holding out, confused.
“It’s my number.” She said, teeth grinding in her mouth.
She tried to give him the same big smile he had given her at the start of their flight.
“Oh.” He said, finally taking it.
He returned the smile.
Sort of.
Alyssa decided to keep the smile on her face, even though she realized that the one he was giving her seemed forced and polite.
She grabbed her carry-on and turned away from the men, anxiously waiting for the people in front of her to leave so she could get the hell out of there.
Mikael shoved the paper in his pocket and glanced back at Joey, who was snickering at him.
