Chu had barely slept the previous night. He had spent the entirety of that time playing League of Legends with Mel and Das wondering about this mystery girl and how he would muster up the courage to ask out a woman of her calibre. He had finally landed on the idea of maybe just simply going up to her and asking her out. He could already picture it, her saying yes and they would go to the movies together, maybe hold hands and then he would see where things would continue. Chu got out of bed and dressed to begin his second day of school.
As he entered the library in the morning, he saw his friends at the usual table and as he approached them, he saw the mystery girl again, but as he looked, his heart sank. It had seemed she had already met another boy, a Caucasian one too. The first thing Chu felt was sadness, but this emotion was quickly overtaken by a more sinister, ugly one, hatred. He vowed to himself like any anime protagonist would that he would get revenge on this boy who had just swooped up the love of his life. Chu would call this boy Dio for he stole the first kiss with the love of his life, so naturally, he called this mystery girl Erina until he actually knew her name.
Chu pointed out ‘Erina’ to his friends as he spoke with them and they laughed jokingly when he admitted that he did not even know her real name. He decided to just focus on school for now because the morning had given him enough to think about for a week at least and he left the library to go to English. The only subject Chu struggled at was English because it was his second language. His parents had been immigrant university students who had come to Australia and had met at the university library.
So, as expected, Chu got through English but with less confidence than when he had maths the previous day. He chatted with his friends at recess and got through the next few periods, physics and chemistry.
At lunch, Chu and his friends went to the library after eating lunch and sure enough, there was Erina sitting by herself at the same table. Yes! Chu thought to himself as he sighed, thinking about how he could finally get the chance to talk to this girl alone.
He walked over to her and said, ‘Hey, I’m Chu. Chu Feng.’
The girl’s expression was empty, but Chu still studied her beautiful black eyes, perfect light red lips and immaculate hair.
Tens seconds after he had introduced herself, she said, ‘My name is Caitlyn Shui.’
Damn! Chu thought to himself. Such a beautiful name to complement such a beautiful being. She must have been a God who had descended down to the mortal realm to live and accept the burdens that pitiful humans like himself had to experience every day.
Chu mumbled out awkwardly the phrase, ‘I like you; would you go to the movies with me?’
Caitlyn almost laughed, ‘You? I’m sorry, you’re sort of cute but I just can’t see myself going out in public with you, sorry.’
Tears almost burst out of Chu’s eyes but determined to act like a really manly Asian man he just sniffed and quietly said, ‘That’s okay, I was just wondering.” He managed to give a meek little smile as well.
The series of events had only occurred within the span of a minute, but to Chu it had felt like an eternity considering Caitlyn’s heartbreaking reply she had given him.
He went to go reserve the table that his friends would be arriving at soon and promised to himself that even though he had been defeated today, one day he would win the heart of this goddess, no matter how long it took.
