Chu had spent the rest of the previous day thinking of a reason for why Caitlyn would actually reject him. She had even said he was sort of cute. From a goddess, that was basically saying he was a pure and righteous man. And then it came to him like an epiphany.
As he was mindlessly doing maths homework in the library after school, he suddenly realised the reason she had rejected him was that she was already taken! How foolish of him to suddenly come and ask out a girl who was already seeing someone else. He had forgotten all about Dio when he had started talking to Caitlyn because her voice sucked him in like a siren luring sailors to their doom.
He had called up all his friends in a discord chat and together they came up with a plan to get Dio out of the picture, even if some of them were against the idea. All the Asians knew that safety came in numbers and that even if one of them went against the idea, they would not be able to lift their heads towards their friends if they got in trouble.
The final plan that was formulated was that Dio would ‘accidentally’ trip on his way to the library where he met Caitlyn every recess. Then Caitlyn would see this and thinking he was a bumbling white fool, she would instantly fall in love with the ‘sort of cute’ Asian she had unceremoniously rejected the previous day. Everything was set and ready to go.
The next day, after first period, Chu introduced himself to Dio and Dio announced that his real name was actually Alexander.
‘Well, that gets rid of Dio now, I guess.’ Chu thought to himself as he politely shook his hand and allowed Alex to go in before him.
Now the plan was in motion.
Mel and Das, who were the tallest out the Asian group, walked next to each other towards the door and bumped Alex backwards, who in turn bumped into Chu who allowed him to simply fall onto the floor.
Thud!
Alex ungracefully hit the floor and everyone in the library turned around to look at the fool who had just tripped on the floor. Or that is what Chu thought. Instead, everyone was looking at Chu and as he looked around he saw Caitlyn, who had a look of shock in her eyes for he had just let her boyfriend slam into the floor.
Alex rose up off the ground and he looked menacingly at Chu, and Chu instantly knew he was in trouble, even without having turned around yet to face him. He gulped silently and turned around to face what he had just done. He knew this would turn into a fight.
‘Hey.’ Alex whispered silently but aggressively.
‘Wha…’ Chu replied silently, trailing off.
‘You just let me fall mate. Do you have something to say?’
Chu looked around to see Mel and Das looking guiltily at the floor and the rest of his friends behind Alex. He also saw Caitlyn still sitting there, open-mouthed. A sudden wave of courage overcame Chu and he replied:
‘No, I let you fall but it was an accident.’
‘Okay, let’s settle this then, at lunch, we fight on the oval. Deal?’
‘Sure.’ Chu replied, trying to seem as cool as possible and impress Caitlyn.
‘QUIET IN THE LIBRARY PLEASE!’ shouted the librarian.
Chu looked up at Alex and Alex, in turn, looked down at Chu, both with fire within their eyes. Then they turned and Alex went to go talk to Caitlyn and Chu went to go sit with his friends.
For some reason, periods 2 (Physics) and 3 (English) passed like lightning today and Chu found himself facing Alex on the oval at lunch. A circle had formed around them consisting of Chu’s friends, Caitlyn and random students who were in their grade.
Dani counted down from 3 and Chu instantly found himself looking at the earth upside down and it was only after 5 seconds that he realised Alex had flipped him over almost as soon the fight had started. He quickly got up and panted, trying to recover air.
‘Had enough yet, four eyes?’ mocked Alex.
‘We’ll see about that.’ replied Chu, as he charged towards Alex.
Because he was so much shorter than him, he easily put his arms around Alex’s stomach and after 10 seconds of struggling, he was able to overwhelm Alex and knock him to the floor. Even though he was so short, Chu had built up a few muscles after helping his parents do housework for so many years. He kept Alex pinned to the ground for 10 seconds and the fight was called off. The crowd around him was stunned. Even Jo had no response for once and he was always making witty comebacks and remarking about people in their grade constantly.
Chu turned to see Caitlyn looking into his eyes. For once, Chu could not tell how she was feeling. Her eyes told him she was feeling a blend of anger, shock, and admiration. Maybe he was finally getting to her and soon a chance to go on a date with her would emerge
