After re-acquiring his staff back on the plateau, Rumfus walked to the edge of the mountain and looked to where he and the Dragon had fallen.
On one of the cliffs above the gap sat another Dragon.
The Dragon looks up the mountainside that the two had tumbled down, then across the gap and up the other mountain and notices Rumfus standing triumphantly at the peak.
The Dragon lets out two short, loud roars before flying over to the largest mountain.
Rumfus begins to make his way down the mountain and over to the other Dragons.
“Well, if they didn’t know I was here before, they do now.”
Rumfus took the long winding paths up to where the Dragons were seemingly waiting for him.
He hadn’t seen any of the Dragons flying around for some time.
It gave him time to think about the situation as he walked.
About Brandy, about Cetrid, about himself, and about all the Cyclopes that lost their lives when the Dragons had attacked.
He started questioning why they came, where they came from.
There was nothing but endless water surrounding Langstay, or that’s what it seemed, at least.
Rumfus began remembering hearing about how several self-named explorers attempted to sail the waters in an attempt to find other lands.
None ever returned.
But why was that?
The majority of the speculation is that they sailed and sailed until they ran out of supplies and perished.
Others suspect that rogue waves may have taken the crew by surprise and flipped the boats.
Some even suspect that they made it to another land and they’ve taken up residence there and have no desire to come back to spread the word.
Or maybe they landed and were killed by the wildlife that resides there.
There was no evidence to rule any of these possibilities true or false.
But this was all before the sun had burnt out many years ago.
One thing was for certain, other lands or not, anywhere far from Langstay would be mighty dark with no source of light of their own.
But this wasn’t Rumfus’ main concern at the moment, though, for there were Dragons to fight and a civilization to save!
Rumfus got to the summit, much like the other mountaintop, there was a somewhat large plateau area here as well.
In the middle laid what seemed to be the largest and oldest Dragon.
As Rumfus approached the Dragon, two others climbed up the opposite side of the mountain and one, around the same size as the largest, flew up and landed somewhat behind the laying Dragon.
The Largest Dragon stood up.
“Why have you come here, little one?”
Rumfus, with his head down, the brim of his hat covering his face, came to a stop.
“As I told your friend who’s down the mountain, resting, you and your kind have killed and driven many from their homes, those people had done nothing to you and your kind.
Such senseless and unnecessary brutality will Not go unpunished.
Since the Cyclopes are unable to avenge their people themselves, I shall do so.”
The Dragon tilts his head.
“And what kind of connection do you have with these… Cyclopes?
What have they done to deserve this kindness from you?”
Rumfus’ face remained hidden by the brim of his hat.
“I’m doing this because it’s the right thing to do.”
The Dragon Exhales through its nose.
“The right thing?
What do you know about right and wrong?”
Rumfus looks up at the Dragon.
“Well, then why don't you tell me why You came here.”
The Dragon takes a couple of steps towards Rumfus.
“This world is a dark place, little one, me and my kind have flown the dark skies in search of somewhere with light, anywhere we’ve gone we’ve been met with hostility.
There was once twelve of us, when we finally saw a source of light and made our way here, there were five, now four.
We had no choice, if we didn’t arrive hostile, we could have lost even more.
Our kind faces extinction, we needed to find somewhere we could live and grow.
I am Alnostrasz, those two in the back are Vetakus and Atekus, and the one behind me is Etev, we only wish to live.
You say you’re doing this because it’s right, is the right thing to do really to kill off the last of an ancient line that is just trying to survive?
Rumfus ponders for a moment.
“No, I guess it isn’t.
But I can’t just let what you’ve done go, so I offer this, Alnostrasz, if I fall, you and your kind may remain, if you fall, however, those three must leave these lands and never return, or I Will hunt them down and I Will Not show this kind of mercy.”
Alnostrasz lifts his head and blows out a burst of fire.
“A duel then?
I would have thought a duel between us unfair, but given what happened to Issav, the fight may be fairer than one would think.
I will not underestimate you as I fear Issav more than likely did.”
Rumfus nods his head.
Alnostrasz takes another step towards Rumfus.
“And what might the name of my opponent be?”
Rumfus looks to the ground for a moment before looking back at Alnostrasz.
“My name is Rumfus the Wizard, all will know of the battle that took place, here, on the peaks of Dan’Burk between the Dragon and the Wizard!”
