WARNING: this episode has a lot of talk about a very serious, and quite sensitive topic. I'm not trying to scare anybody, this is just a novel.
Oh no. Riley thought as she looked down at her daily plan, she had science class next block. Last time it was a disaster. I'm going to have an attack, I'm going to die, she's going to kill me, she's going to judge me, and give me a big fat F on all my work, no. no. no. no! no! these words kept circling in her head. Riley had cried in science class last time. They were talking about cancer cells, and Riley's grandfather was in the hospital, about to get surgery for his own cancer.
The teacher was explaining how when cells mutated, they became broken cancer cells. She also said that sometimes when people get rid of these broken cells, something goes wrong, and the cancer comes back. She said they spread really fast, and there is still no cure for some types. And that's what did it. Riley started crying, really hard, in science class.
She doesn't remember much after that. But her friend took her outside of the classroom to get fresh air. The rest of the class saw what happened, but they kept working, and taking notes. She wiped her tears on her hoodie. Riley was scared. She couldn't stop thinking about how she couldn't go see her grandfather in the hospital until Friday, and the week was still early. She was thinking about how much more he still needed to teach her about hunting and fishing and if...... what IF..... She kept crying. That was a huge trigger for her. It never happened again, but after that, even though her science teacher liked her, Riley thought she would hate her for the rest of the year.
All Riley thought after that was: at least the last thing I told him was "I love you"
