“No, not then... but later, when the City Watch arrested you.” Iola shook her head slowly, keeping her eyes on the wooden tabletop. “And then at the gates of the stronghold...”
“Where you possessed that novice guard...”
“Yes, he wasn’t that hard to control... after a while.”
“Have you tried entering my mind?” The mercenary placed an open hand on the table.
“I... I... yes.” Iola stared at the other woman’s scarred and callused fingers. “I mean, I tried to find you... but couldn’t.”
“So you haven’t entered my mind... yet.”
“Um... no.” She stole a glance at Dacia’s keen eyes staring hard at her.
“Can you, if you try... now?” The taller woman almost demanded.
“I don’t know.” A strange shiver coursed down Iola’s back.
“When you entered that guard’s head...” Dacia seemed to press hard. “...could you see his most intimate thoughts... experience his feelings?”
“I didn’t try to.” Iola couldn’t understand why she was feeling so defensive. “I mean, I scoured his mind for memories of people and places... to find where you and my grandfather were being held in the dungeon.”
“And what effect would that have on the mind of the one you possess?”
“I don’t know... he was the first one, that young man.”
“He was a handsome fellow, wasn’t he?” She looked up to see Dacia’s grin.
“I... I suppose... he was.” A weak smile creased Iola’s lips.
“Much better looking than Kadar.” Dacia laughed out aloud.
“Uh... yes, in a way.” Her cheeks began to feel warm.
“So did you like him?” She noted the strange urgency in Dacia’s tone.
“I... I don’t think so.” Her ears felt warmer too.
“And back in your clan, do you have a special man friend?” The mercenary was prying now.
