“Will you come with me then, Dacia... to my home, among the mountains?” Iola looked hopefully at the yawning mercenary. “Life there won’t be as exciting as you may know it.”

“I don’t care...” Dacia stood up, her perfectly sculpted body, naked and aglow in the pale dawn light, mesmerizing Iola. “I will go with you anywhere and everywhere, including the depths of hell.”

“The mountains aren’t quite hell.” Iola laughed again. “But some of the clans-people can be.”

“Well, fuck ‘em.” Dacia grinned wide. “I’m your friend and lover, not theirs.”

“I will be taking my grandfather’s place among my people; none will dare to deride me...” Iola reached for her dress slung over the single chair in the tiny room. “...but some may have unsavoury opinions.”

“Let them, it wouldn’t cost them to form opinions.” Dacia grabbed her by the wrist, preventing Iola from covering herself with the dress.

“Yes, that may be so...” Iola blushed again, “Oh!”

A sudden sharp rap on the wooden door startled Iola. Two more knocks followed the first, making the narrow door creak loudly.

“Keep your breeches on, man.” Dacia yelled and parted the door by a few inches. “What the blazes is it?”

“The City Watch...” The bald headed owner of the tavern replied in hushed tones, his dark eyes wide with fear. “...are here.”

“What does the City Watch want here?” The tall mercenary demanded coldly.

“They ask for the one called... Iola Starlight.”
