DESTINY BECKONS

THIRTY NINE

THIRTY NINE

Dec 27, 2019

The round table was perfect for three people to huddle in the corner to have a hushed conversation.

Bruno, the innkeeper, nodded respectfully at Nesmir and placed three cups with a flagon of fine red wine for them, then hastily backed away.

They sat down, Dacia and Nesmir immediately downing two cups of the wine in one go.

“Yes, guardsman.” Dacia all but snarled. “What do you want to talk about?”

“I need to understand how I have this connection to you.” Nesmir asked Iola. “At first I thought it was a dream, but it went on and on... all night and even at dawn.

“Then I began to sense that I can reach out to you, and that you are here in this tavern... like a beacon calling out to me.

“How is this happening? Why do I feel that I know you... quite intimately?”

“Er... you see.” Iola glanced at Dacia and then at her full cup of ruby red wine. “I have a gift... which I have recently discovered... and am yet to be adept at.”

“A gift?”

“Yes, man. She’s been saying that for the past few minutes.” Dacia grated. “She can read your mind, also enter it and control you.”

“And you did that... when?” Nesmir gazed quite deeply into Iola’s shimmering green eyes.

She felt heat rising behind her ears and over her cheeks.

Her heartbeat quickened slightly.

Iola had not had a man look so earnestly at her ever before.

And even if one had, she never noticed, since she had hardly ever been in such proximity to one.
