The tomatoes were nearly ripe in Mila’s garden. One was large and red and plump as it bent the entire plant to its side. Whiskers tightened a brown gloved paw and gently snapped the tomato off. He inspected it for small bugs, dusted it off and lightly tossed it in a basket full of small vegetables next to him.
Mila and Rex were digging small holes in a brand new patch of dirt. Using his claw Rex wiggled a small set of holes a couple of inches apart. Mila hunched over and placed a small seed into the little spots he created and then covered them up with the soil with a small smile of satisfaction. She finished a row and looked up at the toothy rat who was staring at another tomato with his paws.
“How’s it going over there?” she asked kindly to Whiskers. The rat turned with a smile and waved the tomato in the air in an “everything’s going great” way. She nodded and walked over to Rex adjusting her large sunhat. The dragon dug another small hole and placed a seed inside.
“I’ve gotten so much work done ever since Whiskers started helping us” she said as she opened a small bag of seeds marked fresh. Rex stood up and wiped the small drops of sweat off his forehead. She gently grabbed her small apron and wiped it off his head. Rex rolled his eyes with a smile as he let her finish.
“Well thanks for letting him have a place to stay for awhile” he replied opening another patch of holes with his index claw. Mila nodded and handed Rex the small packet of seeds. The heat was starting to set in and the sweat was starting to fall off her face as well. She took off her sunhat and started fanning herself with it.
“Oh my. The sun’s getting brutal today” she said looking up at the clouds. Mila placed the sun hat on a patch off grass and took off her gardening gloves. “why don’t I get us something to drink? I’ll be right back”. Rex nodded and licked his tooth as it felt dry. Whiskers turned and clapped his paws happily at the idea.
Mila smiled and walked back into the house. The kitchen was right there with a large glass of sweet looking lemonade with several large ice cubes and lemons floating around the middle of the pitcher. She grabbed the three small glasses and began pouring. As she began to pour the counter top shook the glasses sending them off to the left, spilling the lemonade all over the place.
“What in the?” she exclaimed as she reached for her apron and stopped the spill from falling on the floor. Hastily she wiped the counter and pouted at the mess. She leaned over at the kitchen door to the backyard. “Rex! Whiskers! Are you two messing around out there?” she hollered. There was silence for a moment and then she began to walk out to the back door paws on her hips and all. Finally Rex busted opened the door nearly swiping her snout.
“Hey Mom? Did you say something?” the small dragon asked leaning his head out the door. She pulled on his orange head spikes and brought him in repeating ow ow ow over again. Whiskers ducked behind him with his shoulders hunched over.
“What we do Mrs B?” the rodent asked twiddling his two index claws. Mila half started at the two.
“I told you before Rex not to mess around in the garden. If you want to battle with Whiskers you could do it after we’re done somewhere else” she replied crossing her arms and tapping a foot. Rex looked at Whiskers and raised and eyebrow. He looked back at her and shrugged his shoulders.
“We weren’t battling Mom. If anything Whiskers dropped a tomato and it got all gross” Whiskers gasped and clenched his paws together in shock.
“Ya told me you were not gonna tell her!” he said with a guilty look on his face. Mila too raised a brow and looked at the both of them. Judging from Whiskers alone they didn’t do anything wrong. She took off her drink soaked apron and placed on the counter with a sigh,
“Sorry honey. I guess I’m used to hearing you train that I thought that rumble was you” Rex and Whiskers looked at each other and than back at Mila.
“What rumble? Is that why you called us?” Mila nodded and pointed at he half full glasses of lemonade. Before Rex could say anything else a second rumble shook the kitchen. Then another. Then another. Whiskers ducked under a chair and pulled the hat he was wearing over his head.
“Earthquake!” he shouted. Mila shook her head and turned towards the front door.
“That’s not it. I think someone is knocking strangely at the door.” She walked across the living room with Rex behind her. She brushed herself off and wiped off some sweat from her head spikes and opened the door.
There stood a tall bird that glared the suns rays right back at them. They had to squint to get a better look at her. She was tall and glowed with a bright silvery light. He wings were like three sharp cutlasses from side to side sharp at the edges. It was as if she was made of stainless steel itself. She wiped her beak off and noticed the two dragons looking at her.
“Oh! Uh, hi” she said shaking off her current pose and standing back in a normal bird like stance. She awkwardly smiled at them. “I came looking for a Molly and Zinnia, but then I heard you can maybe help me?” she said leaning towards Rex. Mila’s eyes looked at Rex and back at the bird girl with a small smile.
“Rex? Is this another friend of yours?” she asked opening the door all the way open. Rex cocked his head at her and remembered the little race he and Zinnia had with her the other day.
“We met. Sort of. Maybe?” the metallic bird replied shrugging her wings. Rex walked out and stood next to her.
“Me and Zinnia raced her the other day. She almost won” Rex said crossing his arms triumphantly. The bird snorted and ruffled her two large steel feathers in her back,
“Anyways I heard what you did yesterday” she began to look at the ground fiddling with a small pebble with a talon. “I really need your help. I was wondering if you and Zinnia could maybe do that?” Rex smiled and then sighed.
“Without a monster center to heal her up Zinnia’s kinda sore from all of those bites she took yesterday. It might be another day or two” her head lowered and let out a small frown. She stopped playing with pebble and brushed it aside. Rex perked up and nudged her smooth wings with a shoulder. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t help you. I’d be glad to” he said giving her a reassuring smile.
Anything to get out of the garden a little early. He thought to himself. She looked at him and perked up as well. She grinned and her steel tail feathers waved in joy.
“What exactly did you need help, uh” Mila asked closing the front door behind her. The bird hunched her shoulders a little and grinned her teeth.
“Sorry. Names Skye. I live around the forest area” she replied leaning her head towards the empty road. She stretched out both wings and let out a small crick crack from each shoulder. Whiskers quickly turned around at the sound of the bones and went back under the chair.
“And I’m Rex” the little dragon replied nodding his head at her with a small smile. Skye placed a wing on her hip and nodded back a grin. Mila rolled her eyes knowing exactly what was going to happen next.
“So what seems to be the trouble that you need my little Rexy’s help?” she asked hugging the dragon by the head. She tried to hold on to a giggle and held him even tighter to her chest. Skye just stared at the poor dragon with amusement. She tried to make a kiss like face with her beak making the Rex’s head slowly turn red at the snout.
“For the last few days” she began trying to hold back some laughter. “I’ve been pretty much been baby sitting for a bunch of other bird monsters. They keep coming to my house and asking to stay since someone’s been kicking them all out of theirs” Mila let go of Rex and gasped a little.
“Why that’s horrible. What could be doing such a thing?” Skye shrugged and crossed her feathers together..
“Beats me. There was supposed to be someone protecting that part of the forest but I can’t seem to find him. And some monsters have become angry and attack me for looking for him. I can’t catch a break” Rex tilted his head.
“There’s a forest guardian? Like a walking tree? Or a giant beaver thing or something?” he asked. Skye again shrugged a little with less interest.
“I guess? I’ve never seem him. I just want my house back” she replied with a hint of desperation. Rex nodded and grabbed one of her razor sharp wings. Mila sighed with a grin and crossed her arms.
There he goes again. Starting to act like how I used to be. He always wanted an excuse to go out and do something. It’s also how I met his father. She hid a giggle and looked away from the two. A slight of pink ran across her face.
That’s right! He’s coming home in a few days. Maybe we should have that little adven-
“Mom?” Rex waved at a claw at her.
“Uh is she okay?” Mila snapped out of it. The two monsters were looking at her like she was sick.
“Oh! N-Never better!” she replied letting off a small embarrassed chuckle. She sighed to herself and pensively looked at Rex. “Alright you can go” she lowered her head tiredly. “Just promise me you’ll be careful?” Rex’s eyes widened and happily ran in and out of the house with his small side bag.
“I’ll be just fine!” he said with a hard nod from his head. Skye once more stretched out her wings and sharply expanded them. She leaned her back forward and gestured her head at the little dragon. She started to grow a face of determination and winked friendly at him.
“Get on!” the little dragon nodded and climbed on her back holding her by the shoulders. “hold on to your tail!” she said and soon Rex felt a powerful thrust of wind lift him off the ground and was already at eye distance of small clouds. His stomach felt a bit sickly from the force.
“Maybe next time warn me when you do that?” said the dragon shaking off the sickness feeling. Skye looked back and grinned her teeth with amusement.
“I’ll try” she replied flapping her glowing wings forward.
