The path became more and more narrow. The light that shined above them and shined Skye’s wings withered away. It seemed like all they heard now was their breath and feet walking on the leaf covered grass and rocks. Some of the mushrooms began to glow into a bright neon red and purple light that helped them see the near darkness. Skye stopped and felt a purple and lime green lighted mushroom and saw it s small dusty spores fall off emitting a powdery luminescence all over her metal legs.
“Whoa look it that” the metallic bird bent over at her knees and talons. She was covered with the a rainbow that speckled like a holographic card in the moonlight.
“It’s like I was dipped in rainbow glitter. I kinda like it on me” she said wiping the rest on her wings and chest. She ruffled herself and playfully grinned at the rainbow sparkled glow on her body. The light stayed on her and she took the lead for the two.
“That’s one way to guide us through here” said Rex rubbing his his orange spikes with some of the neon spores. It sparkled the neon lights as well and lit up the trees above him. Further they walked in with more of the mushrooms illuminating their path letting out small gusts of bright spores on the ground. Rex looked at the pathway behind him and saw that entire earth was covered in the spores except for their own footprints.
“Looks like we made a trail without having to” said the little dragon. He suddenly bumped into the wings of Skye. “What’s up?” he asked looking at her. She was examining a dark room that was just up ahead.
“I hear voices” she said slowly expanding her wings. “it’s them” Rex nodded and walked with his claws clenched and a puff of smoke from his snout. They entered the dark field where only a few of the mushrooms lit up the place.
“More intruders” said a voice. Skye and Rex jumped and stood backside to backside claws and talons raised. Rex shot a small ember in his direction and Skye screeched at the other.
“Who are you?” demanded Rex shifting his eyes for an attack. His heart started to race. The voice sounded of a creature that was massive and powerful. It’s voice sounded like an echo.
“I protect these trees from creatures like you. Destroying them for your own amusement. I know you are only here for me”
“So you’re the one kicking out those other monsters and making them live in my house!” replied Skye stretching out her neck look for the voice.
“But what about those other monsters? Why didn’t you kick them out?”
“They share the sympathy as I do. They take care of the trees and not slowly use them as houses, or kindling, or-”
“But they’re creatures of the forest!” a loud rumble swept their feet. They both had a tremble in their bodies as two large red eyes brightened the field. The light revealed a giant tree with two holes for eyes and a long branch as a nose. Two large vines emerged and slapped the two into the ground.
“I protect this forest. I chose who gets to stay and who doesn’t!” Rex and Skye got up from the ground shook a little. Rex took a brave step at the colossal tree. He had dark oak colors all over and his leaves a violent red. Large jet black balls swung from his branches. Skye took that same step as he did.
“We’re not going any were” They both said together. They both smiled and separated from each other in attacking poses. Rex jumped on all fours and breathed a small breath of dragon breath. Skye cracked her neck and raised both wings with a bright metal glow.
“So be it!” Two large vines headed straight for them. Both of them leaped out of the way and landed on opposite sides of the tree monster. Rex spat a pair of fireballs at his attacking vine causing it burn up completely. Skye flew and slashed her vine with a metal wing in half. The tree let out an irritated growl. His branches began to shake furiously throwing the large black round balls at them both.
“This will make the fight end with a bang!” the monster yelled throwing three at Skye. She kicked one and all three exploded right in front of her. Rex was sent flying as he couldn’t avoid three of them over his head.
“They’re bombs!?” Rex yelled slowly trying to get up. He limped towards her with fright. He dodged a pair falling right at him and ducked as one went off in the air above him. Skye lay on the ground barely trying to get up.
“Rex, don’t!” she yelled and was grabbed from the earth by another vine. It squeezed her weakened body and she let out a painful caw. She was too dazed to squirm out. Rex still ran at her and jumped over a bomb and slid underneath another. One rolled right near him but it didn’t go off.
“I’m not letting you take her!” cried Rex and grabbed the bomb. He ran right at the tree beast.
“What?! Get that away from me!” he yelled throwing another vines at him. Rex jumped and tripped over the vine and rolled all the way to front of him. He picked up the bomb and hurled it at face of the monster. It exploded and shook the entire field like a great earthquake. Skye was released and fell to the ground on her side. Rex ran over and held her sharp edged head at her.
“Are you okay?” he said with a determined look at her. She weakly nodded and tried to stand up.
“Never better.” Rex nodded and nudged his spikes at her side in relief. She awkwardly stood up and flapped her wings.
“Can you fight?” he asked digging for any more healing items in his bag. There were non left to his dismay. Skye winked at him with the same determined look.
“Yeah. I can’t let you have all the fun” she replied as she tried to flap up into the air. She still could and let out a powerful screech causing two more vines to shrivel up back into their holes.
Rex turned around and ran at the monster as fast as he could. He lowered his head and dodged two large apples being thrown at him and dove his spikes right into the bottom of it. It let out a growl of anger and knocked the dragon back. Skye flew past the dragon and kicked up a whirlwind of dust blinding it.
“Grab another bomb! Quickly!” she shouted. She flung a barrage of metal blades at another vine and cut it in half. Rex found one near the edge of the field and ran with it over his head. Through the dust he saw the pointed nose branch and flung the bombs right at it sending another earthquake at the monster.
“Alright!” Rex shouted as he held in his breath. “Dragon Breath!” he shouted and struck the heart of the tree monster
The dust settled and the two looked onward as nothing emerged from the ground to attack them. They saw him. A dark severely damaged tree hunched over in defeat. Not a single bomb or apple was left on its branch.
“Did we?” Rex felt his whole body was being strangled. He was sent high into the air and soon another vine grabbed him by the neck making hard for him to breathe. Skye shrieked and let out a glow of her claws.
“Go ahead. Try to cut him down. It’ll be too late by then.” Rex tried to call her name by a third vine closed his mouth and snout from letting out fire.
“I won’t let you hurt him or anyone anymore!” she cawed at him. He just laughed right back at her.
“And what are your going to do about it birdy? Peck me to death” She stood all the way back of the field and raised her wings. She winced from the weakness of the explosion. She felt the sharp scratches from the vines on her once smooth metal body. She had enough. Skye leaped in the air and let out one last mighty screech. Her body shined bright like that of a sun. She spun herself and aimed right at the trees forehead.
“LAST RESORT!” she yelled and in a blink of an eye the tree was cut in half. The grip of the vines physically vanished and Rex fell to the floor on his back. He saw the tree in all of its darkness slowly disappear into the air like dust. Soon there was nothing left and light from the sun emerged from the field. Rex slowly got up and looked around for Skye. His heart started to pound.
“Skye? Skye?” he walked on the trunk of the tree. There in the far distance of the forest was a dull colored glow on the ground. Rex desperately ran over and threw his bag at on the ground. He saw her just lying there motionless almost limp. He picked up a wing. It’s bright silvery texture was dull and rough. He dropped it and picked up her head and neck gently.
“Come on Skye, wake up. Please?” She didn’t answer back. Her neck was limp. Rex breathed in and out slowly trying to hold back. “Skye” he started holding her head by his side. “That was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen”
“Aren’t...I...Rex” Rex’s eyes widened and saw hers look right at his with a faint smile.
“I know we just met. But I want us to be friends” he held a wing with the other claw. She smiled and nudged his head with hers.
“I’d like that. We should do this more often”
“Just don’t do that move again. That’s one I was never taught to use”
“Hey it worked didn’t it?” Rex rolled his eyes and helped her up.
The forest critters all happily ran out of Skye’s house thanking her with little nuzzles from their beaks and noses. She rolled her eyes as Rex laughed at her. She gave him a soft kick with her better leg and said goodbye to the last animal leaving her home.
“Sorry about your feathers Skye. They were so pretty and cool” She looked at her dull and roughed up metal feathers. She sighed and smiled at the little dragon.
“Don’t worry about it. They’ll come off and I’ll have a new and better look next time” she replied settling a wing on her hip. “It’s getting late too. I should take you-ACK!” Rex held her up straight from falling. He shook his head at her.
“I’ll take it from here. You need some rest. Before your parents see what you did to the place” She cringed at the thought and hurried in. Rex tried to wave goodbye but was too late to do so. He sighed and began walking down the long dirt road toward home.
Suddenly his phone ran and he grabbed it in his bag. There was a message on his phone. It was a message from Skye.
Sorry. I wanted to say goodbye. Well goodbye Rex. Battle me sometime okay? I want to meet your other friends! ~Skye
