Not A Little Kid Anymore

Following's Not Really My Style

Following's Not Really My Style

Mar 18, 2020

I have every intention of going home. I just don't feel like I can handle home right now. About half-way back to Stark Tower, I take a detour. "Hey, F.R.I.D.A.Y.?" I ask. Papa built her into my motorbike helmet a couple years ago so that I could be safer and that he could track me. His words, not mine.

"What can I do for you, Blythe?" F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s voice answers through the helmet. Much like the AI that Papa gave to whoever Spider-Man is, F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s voice sounds mostly human with undertones of a robotic voice.

"Can you set up a text to Papa? 'I'm gonna take a detour for a couple hours and then I'll come home. I don't feel like going home yet.'"

"Certainly, Blythe."

"Oh, and send the same one to Dad."

"Of course, Blythe. Messages sent."

And with that, I'm basically free to my own devices. And by that, I mean I can go anywhere. I don't even know where I want to go, I just want to ride somewhere. I suddenly have a thought of somewhere I can go, and I guide my bike to go in that direction.

--

It takes me about twenty minutes to reach where I was going. I park my bike on the side of the building, locking it up so no one can take it. I then walk up to the door and knock on it hard. There's no response. I knock again. Nothing. "Strange!" I yell, knocking hard again. "Open up!"

As if on cue, the door is pulled open with an annoyed gesture. "Should you not be in school, Blythe?"

"I got suspended for kneeing Kai," I say simply. "I didn't want to go home, so I came to visit my favourite mustached wizard uncle." He rolls his eyes and sighs.

"Could you not have visited someone else?"

"I could have...but I didn't want to. Besides, you kind of live the closest to the tower. So can I come in?" I ask, pushing past him. I know he won't say no.

"I suppose." He closes the door behind us. "Do your parents know you're here?"

"Not here per se...but I'm almost 18. I can handle myself. They know that." Strange rolls his eyes and sighs, a very known trait of his.

"What are you planning on doing in the Sanctum? Annoy me?"

"No, I'll just watch you work. It's kinda calming to see you working on all your wizarding shit."

"Sorcery. I'm the Sorcerer Supreme. I partake in the mystic arts, not typically magic. It is sorcery, not wizarding."

"It's easier to say wizard." Again, Strange rolls his eyes and sighs. He walks off somewhere and I follow him quietly.

--

Music. More specifically: my phone's ringtone. I look around from my perch in the air, supported by Strange's Cloak of Levitation that he so graciously let me borrow so that I would leave him alone.

"Psst, Cape. Do you know where my phone is?" Cape supports me so that I'm levitating in a standing position, which allows me to spot my phone. I release the neck clasp and drop down about thirty centimeters to the floor and try to grab it before it stops. I don't quite make it in time, but almost immediately it starts ringing again. I wait to answer it, appreciating the ringtone that I have.

♪"I'm not a piece of cake for you to just discard"♪ is all I hear before Cape hits the answer button on my phone. Dad's voice starts to emit from the speaker as soon as I answer, and I put it up to my ear.

I listen to what he has to say, interjecting with a couple things here and there. "Yeah, I'll be home in like ten minutes. Mhmm, see you then." I start to walk to the door, ready to leave. "I'm going Strange! See you later!" I then walk outside, hop on my bike and begin my ride home.

--

I take the elevator up to my part of Dad's floor, sort of wanting to avoid my parents. The elevator comes up just beside the entrance to my part of the floor, and I just hope that I don't run into either Dad or Papa as I come out. The elevator doors open, and I see just the people I didn't want to see. "You are going to tell us exactly what happened," Dad says.

Suddenly, our height differences become a lot more prominent. Even though Papa is only fifteen centimeters taller and Dad eighteen, the distance seems astronomically large.
