After they left, I decided to raise the white flag quickly, before Hell tried to track Vanessa down. I quickly pack up all my possessions and move them to my car, trying to get it all to fit before the sun sets.
As I watched the last rays of the sun setting, I lit a match and threw it, my house going up in flames. Mason appears right on schedule, “What made you change your mind?” I looked at him slowly, not letting him see the sorrow on my face, “Heaven changed my mind, but next time I won’t let you off so easily. You might think that I am weak but if given the opportunity I will prove that I am not.”
I get into my car and drive away from the life that I have lived for 23 years now. Where will I go? Los Vegas was the best place at the time.
I haven't been to New York since the Statue of Liberty was placed there 70 years ago, maybe I should see how the city is faring?
-----
After 70 years, New York has grown. Not just the proximity of it but the buildings as well, skyscrapers looked over everyone everywhere. This city probably should not have been my first choice, I didn’t think this much change could appear in such a small time frame.
Humanity is truly amazing in the way that they are always doing something with their time, like building.
As I drove around, I realized that a car was not the best transportation method here, the streets were packed in traffic, with most people walking on the sidewalks passing shops and cafes. I didn’t really think this plan through, this New York really only contains Humanity and rats, compared to 70 years ago, this place is horrible.
I’ll need to find a house to rent quickly. Otherwise I will be living in Central Park.
---
This is the first house and I guess this is as good as any. It isn’t in the downtown area and it has a backyard with a tree. There is potential for it and it's cheap with a corner store and café just down the block from it.
I turn back to the owner, “It's perfect, can I move in right away?” The owner was surprised, “ You think it's perfect? I haven't been able to get someone to rent here for close to 10 years now.” I shrug, “This is the first house that I have looked at today, and I am too tired to keep looking for something better.”
She looked at me, “This isn’t a very good neighborhood for a young woman like you, will someone else be moving in as well? I would have to have their name in the lease as well as any animals you might keep, but you can only have a limit of 2 pets.”
I look at her confused, Pets? Does she mean animals? “It will just be me living here, if that changes would they be able to be added to the lease at a later period of time as well as pets?”
The women seemed considerate, “Usually I don’t add things to the lease after you moved in, but since you are by yourself and I am already worried about you, I will allow you to add to the lease at a later time.”
I reach out my hand, “My name is Sophie Dellenie.” The woman introduced herself as Nancy May and shook my hand. As I started to unload my car of my possessions I remembered I didn't take the necessary house material like my pots and pans, this house is too bare.
It needed a human touch badly, something that I feared I could not give it. Vanessa had decorated my last house when she realized how bare it was. As I liked a living colored house, it was hard for me to find things that fit together. If I liked something, I got it. Humanity had a way of expressing themselves in Art.
I should have tried bringing everything after all. It’s gonna be a pain to try and find someone else to buy art from. Maybe Nancy knew of a decorator. Or if an Art Gallery was nearby.
As I finished unpacking my possessions, I decided to take a walk down to that corner store to see what it was about.
As I suspected, food was really the only thing that was here, only canned and bagged foods though, no produce in sight.
I grabbed a couple of bags of salted pretzels and potato chips to ring up at the register. I wanted to go to the café but seeing as the rays of the sun were starting to dip out of view, I figured I should head back to my new home.
As I had expected, the instant the sun was down, Mason showed up, he looked happy, “Sophie, it's so much easier to find you when you have a place in your name.” I sigh and looked at him, “Mason, why are you here? If you wanted to check out my new home you should have called ahead, I would have made dinner.”
He grunted, “I only came because I talked with Gabe, you named a successor? You have never done that before, I know we were at war, but you are still my sister and I hate that you think your time is almost up.” I scowled at him, “Because I named someone, does not mean I plan on dying right now. She had to go to Heaven, that is why I named her now she can at least come back to the Earth once I have moved on. Think of it as a gift to her, as it was you who ruined it for her.”
I’m being mean, but the truth hurts sometimes.
He gave me a pained look, “Sophie, I trusted someone that I shouldn’t have and that's why I was 500 years ahead of time. I would never have imposed on your domain like that if I knew you were alive and well.”
I gave him a thoughtful look, “Why did you think I was dead? Did you really think that I could be killed so easily? A few factories here and there won’t kill me.” He looked at me sheepishly and scratched the back of his neck, “It wasn't that at all, I was told you were dead and that the Earth was dying, I assumed that your domain was falling apart and that it couldn’t be brought back up. I’m Sorry, and I wanted to tell you in person. That's why I came here today.”
I wasn’t expecting an apology so soon, “Mason, I only have chips and pretzels but would you like to come in? I just moved in today and haven’t decorated yet so it's pretty bare.” He gave me a big smile but shook his head, “How about I call ahead next time and you make dinner? I would hate to impose on you so soon after all I am the reason you had to move so suddenly.”
Mason always was my favorite little brother. Which is why when Hell was without a King, I appointed Mason. He had some great ideas to get Hell organized and he was too kind to do any real damage at the time.
I give him a warm smile, “Be sure to call ahead of time, maybe we can even convince Gabe to come as well.” Mason looked at me, “I would like that very much.'' With that being said, he disappeared.
I looked to the night sky and sighed, the stars are not visible with the air pollution in this big city. I wonder how long I will stay here. I glanced at my new little house, it looked so sad it will take me forever to brighten it up. It needs a good paint job.
