Princess?
Princess Dvina Celesta?
Did Iola hear that right? She had to, for everything else she saw and heard was as clear as crystal.
Then it must be Esamus who was lying.
But why would he?
If he wasn’t lying, then Dacia was indeed royalty.
But why the ruse, what was this formidable young woman up to?
Doubts and questions, so many of them assailed her shell-shocked mind from all directions at once.
Iola found it harder to focus, to maintain her hold on Kargan’s murky mind.
The guardsman also had his own thoughts swarming around inside his head; thoughts that made Iola’s skin crawl.
She tried to fight his lewd thoughts and bring his focus back to Dacia.
Kargan was staring hard at Esamus and Iola was getting sick at the sight of this arrogant snake of a man.
She concentrated hard, doing her best to control the guardsman, to make him turn his head and look at Dacia down by his booted feet.
But somehow she couldn’t.
Why was this so difficult now?
She had successfully controlled Nesmir in the stronghold not too long ago.
And at that time she wasn’t even sure of herself and also not as aware of the extent of her gift as she was now.
Was it her emotions getting in the way?
Her concern for Dacia, coupled with the shock of experiencing Kadar’s violent demise?
The harder Iola tried, the more difficult it became.
She felt her hold over the burly guardsman slipping away.
Swaths of colour streaked across her mind’s eye, obscuring what she was looking at through Kargan’s eyes.
Clawing fingers of desperation tried to hold on to whatever tendrils of thought she could find inside the cruel guardsman’s mind.
But alas, she couldn’t.
Weariness overcame her and she succumbed to its false promise of respite.
Iola fell backwards, her mind going into a spiral of black, white and the several shades of grey in between.
