“Oh, wait.” A wide smile stretched across Nesmir’s handsome face. “I remember now... Lord Esamus changed the guard roster... I wasn’t even supposed to be on gate duty last night.”
“But you were.” Iola stared at him questioningly.
“Yes, I lost a game of dice to Ulrich, the one who was on roster. and I had to do his shift.”
“But won’t that be discovered.” Dacia scratched her head and eyed Nesmir with suspicion.
“No one will ever report such things higher up.” The young guardsman grinned. “It’s between the guards on duty.”
“So this Lord Esamus will not know of you being the one on gate duty last evening.” Iola was rather relieved.
“That is correct. We have nothing to fear.”
“Good! Then you can make yourself scarce now.” Dacia waved her hand at him dismissively. “We plan to leave the city tonight.”
“Oh, yes. I near forgot...” Nesmir sat upright. “Lord Esamus has ordered a full curfew; no one leaves the city until he says so... I am still unclear why.”
“Damn it all. A full curfew.” The mercenary slammed her fist on the table, nearly knocking over the wine cups. “We can’t even leave this tavern now.”
“But... we must leave.” Iola’s eyes darted from Dacia to Nesmir and back.
“Yes, we will.” Dacia assured her. “But we need to find out what’s going on.”
“Only the City Watch is allowed to walk the streets at curfew.” The young guardsman cocked his dark haired head.
“Which means only you can find out what’s going on.” Iola looked pleadingly at Nesmir.
“Yes.” He smiled pleasantly at her. “And I will.”
“And why would you do that?” Dacia rounded on the young man. “We know nothing about you... why should we trust you?”
“I... I have this strange need to be near Iola... to protect her.”
“That’s my job, boy.” Dacia jabbed her long forefinger at Nesmir’s bronze breastplate. “And just because Iola and you have some magical mind bending connection, you expect us to believe that you will rebel against your own superiors... for us.”
“For Iola.” Nesmir nodded. “I will.”
