“I don’t like this, Iola.” The mercenary furrowed her brow. “He could lead us into a trap...”

“No, Dacia.” Iola smiled with assurance. “I know he won’t do that...”

“Because you are in his mind... and he is in yours.” The hint of jealousy in the mercenary’s voice amused Iola, and at the same time frightened her.

She didn’t want the two of them to have a fight over her.

“I... in a way, yes.” She said and then added with more conviction. “But I know I can trust him.”

“Your trust is all I need, my lady.” Nesmir bowed his head to her.

“Your lady... pffft!” Dacia scoffed and shook her head. “So what now?”

“I leave now to gather more information on the situation.” Nesmir stood up and drained his wine cup. “I will return here by this eve.”

Iola watched the young guardsman give her a warm smile, turn around sharply and walk swiftly away from them.

The tavern wasn’t even a tenth as crowded as it usual was at that time of morning. The curfew Nesmir spoke of was indeed in full effect.

“Damn, I thought he’d never leave.” Dacia spat in disgust. “Cursed rookie.”

“You are being too hard on him, Dacia.” Iola laughed with some effort at Dacia’s obvious discomfiture. “He’s just a confused young man.”

“So he is... and what of you, are you growing fond of him?”

“I... he... he’s very well mannered.”

“Yes, quite unlike the rest of his ilk.” The mercenary clicked her tongue. “Which reminds me, I need to find Kadar... I trust his word more.”

“He wasn’t of much help.” Iola pursed her lips.

“Kadar did what he could.” Dacia gave her an admonishing look. “He came through for me many times before.”
