I couldn't look Eric in the eyes that night, or the next day. Janet didn't know anything and kept going on about how Eric was on drugs. The rest of that weekend was more than stressful for me. So when Monday finally came around I was more than happy to get out of my house and go to work, today I didn't even care that the asshole who'd been stealing my spot was once again there, even after I had left a note on their windshield last week. Twice.
But it wasn't going to bother me, with my head held high I parked in a few spots and walked into my building, greeting the two ladies that were chatting at the desk and walked to stairs to my office door. Or at least I tried to before I could make it into the stairwell my name was called from behind me. I turned around to come face to face with a smiling Scott, who held two hot cups in his hand with steam filtering from the lid. "Hey! I bought you coffee, I wasn't sure what you liked so..." I took the outstretched mug from Scott's hand, once his hand was free the smaller man dug into his pockets pulling out three packets of sugar and four creamers.
I laughed taking one of each and sat the coffee mug down on a nearby table, emptying sugar and cream into the steaming hot liquid. "Thanks," I told him with a smile, earning a toothy grin from Scott before we both started up the stairs.
"Don't worry about it," Scott said taking each step gracefully beside me. Today Scott wore a deep brown suit, that actually reminded me a lot of something my father had worn in the '80s. But not in a bad way, it didn't fit him as my father's suit did obviously. He wore a dark blue tie with a suit and a white dress shirt. His hair was untouched by product and he looked like he hasn't slept at all last night, so before I bid him a farewell I opened the door to my office, nodding my head hoping he would get the hint to come inside.
It didn't take long for Scott to understand my gesture as he stepped into my office with a loud, dramatic sigh and threw himself into Jennifer's desk chair. "I feel like I could fall asleep right here." He complained, rubbing his two hands down his face as he leaned his head back. His coffee resting on her desk. I frowned, leaning my body on the half-wall that separates the front desk from the back of the office, which was really just a hallway that leads to my own office, and to the door to the exam room.
"Still not sleeping?"
Scott let out another long sigh. "I'm working on a case, husband and wife, seven kids involved, half one foster, three adopted, three their own. It's a sticky case, and I'm not a family case lawyer, but this is the case my grandfather wanted me on for my first one. Said it builds character" He rolled his eyes. "Because helping tear down the walls of a broken home is totally a character trait I want people to think I have."
I pulled up a nearby chair, and sat in next to him and gave his arm a light squeeze." Nobody is going to think you as the bulldozer to a broken home. I think a good majority of people understand it's your job, and if they don't, well they're not smart enough to use a good lawyer anyway." I said with a smile, Scott peeked his closed eyes open and looked at me, then to my arm. That I didn't realize until that very moment was still rested on his arm, quickly I pulled it away and sat it on my lap. Scott smiled, sitting upright as he took a deep breath.
"Yeah, I guess you're right. It's just a hard case. Dad wants the house, but mom wants to still live there, the dad doesn't want her in his house. Which belongs to both of them seeing as they had built it together and both of their names are on all of the contracts. Both of them want to be the main caregiver of the children. Both want the other to only have weekend visits. It's... a lot."
"You sound like you need a night out of your head."
"Out of my head?" He raised an eyebrow, giving me a curious glance. "What, you want to take me out, Doctor?" He smirked.
I shook my head, giving him a small chuckle. "I think you should go to a movie or something, and if I happen to be there, well then that's fine. I could use a night out too." Hopefully with the promise of Janet being asleep before I get home. And as bad as it sounds, I also hoped my kids would be in bed too because I still didn't think I could face Eric at this moment.
"Sure," Scott smiled standing up from the desk. "Want to catch a movie tomorrow night? I've been dying to see that new Armstrong movie."
"Lance or Neil?"
"Neil."
"Count me there then. Want to go right after work or I could pick you up."
"I'll need to get out of my work clothes. How about you give me your number and I'll text you my address?"
I couldn't help the smile that was on my face, it was like it didn't want to leave. It makes my mouth and cheeks hurt, but I couldn't will it away. "Sure, hand me your phone."
Scott didn't get off work until seven, which was two hours after I had gotten off
Scott didn't get off work until seven, which was two hours after I had gotten off. My plan was to run home, change my clothes and then run out of the house before any questions were asked, text Janet that I was out for a while and wouldn't be home for dinner and they'd all be in bed before I got home.
But that didn't happen.
When I got through the door, Janet was standing in the kitchen with her checkered red and white apron on, flour all over the counter and cookies cutters littering the island, she looked up at me, greeting me with a smile when I poked my head into the kitchen. "Hey, sweetie! How was work?"
"Yeah, it wasn't too bad. Had to fill in four-year-olds cavities, that was fun." I said, biting a little sarcasm at the end, I walked into the kitchen, setting my briefcase on a chair that sat adjacent to the island, she walked around and placed a chaste kiss on my cheek. "I'm making chicken for supper, did you want rice or potatoes with it?"
I forced a smile at her, leaning down to kiss her forehead before walking to the fridge and pulling out a bottle of water. "I actually won't be home for supper tonight, a couple of the guys and I are going out for a few drinks."
"On a Wednesday?"
"Yeah, Clark has plans Friday night, and Robert has worked on the weekend." I couldn't figure out why I was lying. Why didn't I just tell her the truth? I was going to see a movie with a new guy who worked upstairs, It wasn't like it was a crime.
Maybe it was because I knew she started questioning about Scott, and there wasn't really much I knew about him besides the fact that he was a lawyer and he was apparently rich.
"Oh that's nice, I guess it'll just be me and Morgan tonight then. Maybe we'll go get our nails done."
"Where's Eric?"
"He went to Sam's to study for a test. Said he'll be home around nine."
"Did he need me to pick him up? I can get him afterwards."
Janet looked at me for a second, then grabbed a bit of cookie dough before popping it into her mouth. "I thought you said you guys were going drinking?"
Well, didn't think that one through.
"I'm the DD. I'm good to pick him up." She smiled, easily believing me. Of course, she would, I had no reason to lie to her. Why was I lying to her?
"I'll give him a text and ask him. You have fun tonight babe."
"I will." I kissed her once more on the head before going up the stairs
