Falling to the floor the knife lands next to me. What was I going to do? My
whole body was shaking with fear from what just happened. Forcing myself
up I run to my room getting my cell phone. The only person I could call is my
grandmother Josaline. It rang four times before she answered the call.
“Grandma...Can I come see you?”
I was trying my best not to sound scared out of my mind.
“Of course my darling. It has been such a long time since you’ve come to
see me. We’ll have to catch up once you arrive dear.”
Thank goodness she didn’t ask me anything right now. Being honest what
would I even say at the moment. I sat there for a few minutes before getting
myself into clean clothes. I called for a taxi since there was no way in hell I’d
walk to her house.
On the drive over the fear was still welling up inside. Samuel was an actual
Demon. Did that make all the gangsters I’ve encountered one as well? The
taxi driver leans back tapping my leg. I jump not even realizing we’d stopped
the car. Apologizing, I pay him a little extra for dealing with a weirdo like me.
Walking to the gate the guard looked me up and down like a stray animal.
“I’m here to speak to Josaline. I’m her granddaughter.”
The man raised a brow making a call on the phone. He hung up the phone
pushing the button to open the gate still watching me. Normally I’d have
made some snide comment to him. At this moment in time I only wanted to
see my grandmother. As I reached the front door it opened to one of the
servants.
“This way young Miss. Madam is waiting for you in the tea room.”
Okay looked like nothing has changed here in all these years. The maid
guided me to the room then left.
My grandmother Josaline is my father's mother. This is a surprise when I met
her since she isn’t like my father at all. He is nothing but cold to me. The first
time I met her she picked me up hugging me. I was six years old at that time.
“Katerina dear now tell me what is bothering you.”
She placed a porcelain tea cup down on the table. Her eyes glued to me;
while waiting for me to speak. Letting out a deep breath I take another one in
to calm down.
“Do you believe in demons?”
My question had her brow raised with interest. She leans forward with a
warm smile taking my hand over the table.
“Why do you want to know this my dear?”
Somehow this was starting to feel very strange. I pull my hand back getting a
cup of the tea myself.
“I’ve seen a demon with my own eyes. He was in my home.”
Josaline stood up so fast that I almost fell over. She walked to the door
yelling for her butler.
What was going on now? She had a worried expression but there was
something else about it almost like hatred. Josaline walks over grabbing my
hand taking me out of the tea room.
“Katerina dear you must never let yourself be near one of those filthy
things. It is about time you learn of our history.”
Huh our history...now everyone was going insane. Just great she was acting
like a loon. She walked me to the third floor. It was a door that as a child we
were never allowed to enter. Josaline pulled a necklace from her shirt, on the
end was a key. I watched as she unlocked the door pulling me into the room.
What the fucking hell was I even looking at?
“I know this may come as a shock my dear. We are angels. Your mother's
family are angels as well. We’ve spent millennia to make sure the blood
never diluted.”
Okay if I hadn’t seen Samuel as a demon this would be scaring me. She walks
me over to a book in-cased in glass. It was placed on a stand away from the
other objects in the room. The glass had a latch on the side to open it for
viewing.
If there were fairy tales in this book I was done. There wasn’t much more my
mind could handle at the moment. Josaline opens the case to show me the
front page. It was in some other language. At first glance I couldn’t
understand a word it said. Taking another look everything was written where
I could read it.
“This is a history of how Angels really came to live on the earth with
humans. There is no heaven any longer. It was destroyed over a millennia
ago. On that day we decided to blend in with the humans. Most of our kind
can’t even bring out their wings. Nor can they use their powers. Some don’t
even know what they are until their death. I did want to wait longer to
show this all to you. Seeing as a demon has shown interest in you, it
seemed the perfect time.”
What could I say to her? I just stood there blankly. I’m an angel? No this can’t
be real can it?
I felt her hand on my shoulder as I looked over. No...I don’t want to be in
some fucked up war with demons. It was bad enough dealing with my mother
all those years.
“No! I can’t do this grandmother.”
As I pulled away she grabbed my arm hard.
“You don’t have a choice now. This demon obviously knows what you are.
If he can tell then you might even have the ability to call your wings forth.
There is no escaping this fate now child.”
Josaline pulled me into her arms.
“From now on child you need to be more careful.”
Yeah how was that going to work? I worked in a place that those gangsters
frequent very often. Letting out a sigh of defeat I lay my head on her
shoulder.
“Grandmother you know I can’t escape don’t you?”
She held onto me tighter just keeping my face from seeing her own.
A knock on the door got her to let me go. It was her butler who seemed to
have something to say.
“Ma’am Henry is here to see you.”
Oh shit my father was actually here. She leaves me in the room but I crack it
open to listen. My father had walked up the stairs. He stopped at the top just
looking to his mother.
“Where is she? I know Katerina came here.”
If anyone could see my face they’d laugh. My expression had to be a
bewildered one. Josaline stood her ground before him. She didn’t want to let
him near the room it appeared.
“She is an adult now. Why are you looking for her?”
I could see him trying to act calm but not really.
“Tonya’s parents want to see her and Abel. You know as well as I that they
don’t like being kept waiting.”
Josaline laughs looking to her son. Her laughter caused Henry to bite his lip
in anger.
“I see they still have you both strung along like puppets. Even though I
helped arrange your marriage to Tonya, you have made it a living hell.”
Her words made him even more angry then I’d ever seen. Henry took off
down the stairs cursing the whole way.
