For the better Or the worse

four

four

Apr 02, 2020

How I managed to sneak out of the house is beyond me. I must have unlocked some serious ninja skills because my window didn't even creek, I didn't even make a loud thump, and I ran out of the house and didn't get caught. Again, beyond me on how that happened.

When I got to the park, I didn't see a six-foot-something boy sitting on a rock looking up at the sky like I imagined. I actually began to panic when I didn't see a six-foot-something boy sitting on a rock looking up at the sky.

But like when we first met a boo was heard from behind, scaring the living hell out of me.

"Sorry, didn't think that would get you the second time." Then he touched me. He placed his heavy but tender tan hands on my shoulder. I flinched. For a second...no a millisecond, I thought about what my brother had said. His words began to jumble me around to the thought that Robin was indeed a bad guy. But when I saw the look of fear in his eyes I remembered, he's not that bad. "Ah, if you don't want me touching you, just tell me."

"No!" Then I realized what I said. "I mean, you can touch me. Ah, shit that sounded bad too." I racked my brain trying to figure out what the right way to say no you can touch me without sounding like a creep. But I didn't have to because he laughed, he understood.

"Got it, Ace. I can touch you." I mentally slapped myself because damn I'm embarrassing. Before I could sulk any longer, he walked to an empty patch of land. The grass was soft enough to run your hands through and not flinch in pain.

Robin walked with ease, a saunter if you will. It almost seemed as if he owned the park. Like someone would run up with a crown and a throne, so he'd rule upon it.

"Well, if you're going to just stand there and look stupid, you might as well leave." He laughed letting me know it was a joke.

"Sorry, Mother Nature did a damn good job at making this park. I just needed a second to take it all in." I attempted to saunter, but it turned out more like a toddler taking their first steps. Robin found that amusing and let out a laugh. His laugh made me shiver and sent a weird feeling through my body.

"How's your brother?" Which caught me by surprise. Was he really wondering how my brother was doing? Why was he wondering how my brother was doing?

"He's fine, I guess." And for some reason, Robin smiled. He smiled at the fact that my brother was doing fine.

"That's good to hear."

"And how about you?"

"Hate to break it to you, Ace, but I don't have a brother."

"No, stupid. I'm asking how your doing— you know what, never mind. Geez, I try to be nice and look at how that goes." I mumbled the last sentence.

"I'm doing fine." Yet, the way he said that made me wonder if he was really doing fine. How he choked out the final letters of fine and how his face twisted to a mixture of hatred. All this made me remember how much I don't know about Robin. "Sorry, that came out wrong." I must have been making a face because Robin felt the need to correct his actions.

"This park is very nice." He whispered not really directing it towards me.

"It is indeed breathtaking." What was more breathtaking was the way Robin seemed to move with the enclosure. The way Robin's face turned from a sour to harmonic state. How the park seemed to fill his azure eyes with untouchable emotions. He seemed to be stuck in a film noir, how every movement seemed dejected. I wanted to pull him out from the black and white film showing what is on the other side of bliss.

"Thank you." I didn't understand why he was thanking me. While I had done nothing but admire his actions, he seemed to be happy with my presence.

"For what?" As if my question didn't reach him, he didn't answer. This six-foot-something teen walked closer to me with a smile.

"Thank you." I attempted to grab his arm and pull him back wanting the elaboration of the thank you, but he seemed in thought. "I think it's time we part ways, Ace." And like that, he disappeared. Almost like how we first met at the stadium, he was there then he wasn't. Robin really baffled me more than words can explain.

When entering my house, everyone was at rest. I slipped in going unnoticed and managed to get five hours of sleep. I wouldn't have woken up if it weren't for my brother sitting on the edge of my bed.

"Mornin' sunshine." I groaned a greeting as he left my room. Maybe staying out wasn't such a good idea, but it was nice to anyways.

My brother and I have the same favorite cereal. Trix. It's something we have always eaten and has been our favorite. So when I got to the kitchen, there were two bowls, one bowl of Trix with milk and another without milk. Mine is the one without milk.

"I made breakfast for us."

"I don't know if that is what you would call making breakfast, but okay." I was glad to see he wasn't hating my guts.

We ate in silence only hearing the crunch of the cereal. Jace always finished eating before me, so he put his bowl down first. "Leaving in five." I just nodded and continued to spoon feed myself.

My five minutes were up, so we headed out to school. This time in the same car because my brother didn't seem to hate me that much today. The feeling of hatred he once had towards me had died down.

When I got to school, a six-foot-something teen did not sling his arm around me nor did I see him at all. I scanned the halls finding nothing but faceless teens.

"Who are you looking for?" My brother asked a tinge of anger in his voice.

"I'm just counting all the people in the room." Which was the best excuse I could come up with.

"And how's that going for you?"

"Well, terrible because everyone keeps on moving around! I swear I counted the boy in the blue sweater at least five times." Jace got a good kick out of that, laughing out loud. Did a whole LOL.

"Figured, maybe if you could freeze time, you could count better."

"Contrary to popular belief, I cannot freeze time."

"Too bad. I would love to have a brother that could freeze time. You could get all the right answers to test. Man, you could be a genius! Imagine that." I laughed at the thought of me, Chase Oliver Stone, getting a grade higher than a 75.

"Man, mom, and dad would be so proud of me. I would be their favorite child!" Jace just laughed.

"Uh huh." Jace, the favorite child, and I went separate ways.

And even when Jace wasn't there, Robin didn't scare me nor did he swing his arm around me.
