For the better Or the worse

Apr 07, 2020

"Well, of course, you left to go to him." My brother muttered to me when I sat back down. "Why wouldn't you?"

"Jace, calm your tits. I just went to give him an apple. Clearly, something bad had happened so I wanted to make sure he was okay. Isn't that what friends do?" Jace's face relaxed into a smirk.

"You guys are friends?" I stuck out my bottom lip and nodded. "Does he really think of you as a friend?"

"I see what you're trying to do, Jace. You are trying to trick me into thinking Robin and I aren't friends. We are. I know we are."

"Oh yeah? I mean, you only ever see him at school for less than two minutes. How can you possibly become friends like that?" Oh shit. I forgot, he doesn't know about the park.

"We just had a good connection." I shrugged to him while tapping my fingers on the table.

"Are you sure he isn't using you?" Jace, what are you trying to say?

"Robin isn't like that. Why would he use me? What use can he get out of me? If you haven't noticed, I'm useless." My brother scoffed...he scoffed. How rude.

"I mean, maybe you're a fling. Have some fun, throw you away, find someone new to buddy up with. You know, like he always does."

"I don't know what you're talking about, Jace. But whatever it is, it's nonsense." We had a stare down. I wasn't going to back away this time because of my stupid eyes.

"Trust me, I know better than anyone else." With a quick, sudden movement, Jace stood up and walked away. I have no idea where he was going and I wasn't planning on chasing after him. I just sat there staring at Jake and Jack.

"What's his problem?" I stared at the twins. "I'm just making friends and suddenly he is all mad at the one friend I made. Like, can't he be proud that I made a friend!"

"Well, maybe he has a reason." Jack (maybe Jake) told me.

"Yeah, maybe there's a specific reason he doesn't like Robin." Jake (maybe Jack) added.

"You're right." I placed my hand on my chin and pondered. "Do you guys know?" They shook their heads in unison. "Damn." I sighed. "Detective Chase is on the case. Why does Jace not like Robin? We will soon find out." Of course, when I try to be funny nothing happens. The twins stared at me with confusion written all over their faces. "Tough crowd."

Chase: Do you know why Jace hates you?

It was a very strong way of putting it, but I had to ask. But Robin didn't answer. He had a thing where he would only answer texts that he likes. If it was something he doesn't like, he wouldn't answer. Why? I don't know.

Chase: Are you going to the park?

Which was a silly question because of course, he was.

Robin: Yeah, I am.

See, only answers the texts he likes. What a mystery that is.

Chase: Okay, I'll see you there.

He probably already knew that I was going. It was just nice for him to know, to be sure.

"Chase, please refrain from using your phone in my class, I rather you learn than rot your brain because of your phone." My algebra teacher had a point, but this was important.

"Yes, sir. My attention is on you and not on my mind-rotting phone."

"Good." Then Mr. Howard began to teach more about algebra, not one of my strong suites. I wonder what class Robin is in. Is he good at that class or— "Right, Mr. Stone?"

"Yes, two plus two does equal four."

"Well, you're not wrong. But that's not what I'm talking about." Everyone in the class was staring at me. Even that fly that likes to buzz all over me... yeah, he was staring at me too.

"Sorry, sir. I was thinking about how two plus two can equal fish. When it, in fact, equals four. So why do people say it equals fish?" Mr. Howard rubbed his fingers against his temples and sighed.

"Chase, just pay attention."

"Yes, sir." I have the attention span of a two year old, I can't focus for more than three minutes. But if I slapped myself every time my mind would wander, I would end up paying attention. I would also have a bruise on my face but that's besides the point.

"If slapping yourself will keep you focused, go ahead and do that. Just pay attention. I need you to pass your midterm." Mr. Howard sure was desperate. Just like all of my other teachers.
