"So let me get this straight," the nurse said, clearly annoyed that someone was already injured one hour into the first day of school, "Katy, you were walking over to Max when you tripped on a desk and hit your head on another desk? And when you tried to get up you fell back down?"
Max let out a low chuckle, trying to hide his clear amusement with the situation.
My face turned red as I looked down at the floor and stated, "Yes, that would be correct."
"Okay, then let's check you for concussion symptoms to make sure that you didn't hit your head too hard. You don't seem to be confused or experiencing any memory loss. Headache? Any ringing in the ears? Are you having any sensitivity to the lights around you?"
"No, none of that. I think maybe I just took a hard fall."
"Well, why don't you fill out this concussion checklist for me. We'll need to keep an eye on this for a few days. Sometimes the symptoms might not show up until later," she said as she handed me a paper with a list of questions.
I grabbed the paper and pen and began to mark my answers. Vomiting? Nope. Fatigue? No more than usual. Difficulty concentrating? You mean while sitting on the lap of a cute guy? None at all. I finished marking up the handout she had given me and handed it back for her to look over.
"Okay, well it looks like as of right now you aren't showing any signs of a concussion but you did hit your head pretty hard. If you decide to go back to class I'd like someone to watch out for you," she informed me. She looked at Max, "Do you have any classes with her? Maybe you could make sure she's doing okay?"
I started to reassure her that I would be fine and that he didn't have to do that but Max interrupted me.
"We'll make sure to compare our schedules on our way to first period and I'll make sure to check in on her as often as I can. Wouldn't want to have her falling for anyone else now would I?"
My face turned bright red.
"Well, I think we should be heading to first period now. Thanks for your help, I'll make sure to check back in tomorrow morning," I told the nurse.
"Okay, be careful," she warned me.
Max stood up, still planning to carry me to retrieve our backpacks from homeroom. The second the door to the nurse's office closed behind us I let him have it.
"So much for being nervous," I told him rolling my eyes.
"Once I saw how nervous you were I guess my mindset kind of shifted. Don't worry, you still give me butterflies."
I rolled my eyes again. "You know you can put me down now. I'm going to have to walk to my next class anyway."
He carefully set me down and we continued our walk back to homeroom.
