A Vampire in 14C (Old One)

Chapter Three - Part Three

Chapter Three - Part Three

Apr 05, 2020

I dreamed again only this time it involved an army of bat winged jellyfish lead by Mrs. Cunningham attacking me. To be honest, it was very unsettling. Thankfully I woke before I was eaten alive. It didn't take a genius to decipher the meaning of that nightmare. After I slunk out of bed, I peek out through my door and then wander out into the living area to check on mother dearest. She's not there, only the throw blanket left haphazardly. She must have moved to her room sometime during the night because when I press my ear against her bedroom door all I hear is soft snores and the creak of the ceiling fan. She usually sleeps in till noon on the weekends so I let her be.

I spent the better part of the morning devising plans to retrieve my papers without directly having to deal with Felix. The only plausible solution was to get Joanna to do it. This of course was only after I ruled out learning to lock pick, sending agent Mabel, and commanding a swarm of mice. Yeah, I'm not sure where that last one came from.

I'm sitting at my kitchen table stirring soggy cheerios and eying the cordless phone. I bite my lip and finally pick up the phone ready to dial Joanna's number. I stand up and wander into the living area leaning against the back of the couch. She'd do it, right? She loves me. Of course she will. Besides, I'm sure she'd be thrilled to snoop out the new tenant that's been giving me the heebie jeebies. I start to punch in her number when there is a knock at the door. I tense up for a few seconds when the dial tone of the phone brings me back from my mind running wild with horrific scenarios. I click it off and set it on the end table.

Slowly I make my way to the front door and press my hands against it licking my lips nervously. It's not like it's completely unusual for someone to knock on the door but I can't help thinking the worse after last night. Felix could be behind that door ready to rip my throat out. I know I am probably delusional about this but he is kind of creepy, isn't he? I rise on the balls of my feet a little and peer through the peephole. I'm relieved to see no one especially not Felix but that doesn't extinguish my fears. Flat on my feet again, I count to three before unlocking the door, closing my eyes, and swinging the door open quickly. When nothing immediately happens, I open one eye and peer around. I stick my head out and look down either end of the hall.

My eyebrows furrow and I step out just as I see Mr. Murphy going to unlock his apartment door. However, something catches my eye and I turn to face our apartment door. Taped just underneath the peephole is an envelope with my name scrawled neatly across it. The handwriting reminds me of medieval or Victorian fancy scrawl that'd you see in one of those period films or what Shakespeare's handwriting might have looked like. I pull it off and stare uncertainly at it. Well, it's addressed to me so I guess I should just open it. Of course, something very unpleasant could be inside it but considering I don't have much of a social life I don't really have too many nemeses. I shake myself out a bit and open it.

It's the papers I printed out on jellyfish.

Colin is not a typical teenager. He's actually responsible, he takes care of his mother more than the other way around, he's home-schooled, his best friend is an artsy college student, and he has a poor immune system. They live in Avalon Apartments with a variety of kooky tenants and Colin only ventures four or five blocks from the complex. Life isn't exactly normal but it is certainly far from paranormal...that is until a new tenant moves into apartment 14C. Felix gives Colin the shivers and he's starting to suspect he isn't exactly human. Also, why is he never wearing shoes? Colin is convinced he's something supernatural but is it just a crazy delusion or are his suspicions real? This poor teen is about to find out, one way or another.
