I overslept and was pretty much dead to the world until the next morning. By now my ass was freezing off and I needed to warm the house as fast as possible.
I already made a shopping list of all the things I needed to buy, and it was endless. It was painfully clear, there was no way I could manage to do all this without renting a car.
I put on multiple layers of clothing and thick woolen socks to protect myself from turning into an icicle.
When I stepped out on the porch, I realized to my utter horror that it has already started to snow. Now, don't get me wrong, I loved snow, but I didn't know how will I safely maneuver my rented car on a slippery road without killing myself or someone else in the process.
I needed to get a move on and buy all the things I needed until the end of the day. I hurried towards the town, in the direction where Jeffery's house was supposed to be. I saw a sign for William Memorial Airport so I turned right on a narrow serpentine road. It was about short ten-minute walk until I spotted an airport and a crocked sign that said "Car rental" right next to it.
This place was nothing like fancy salons in Moscow. It was out in the open with various rusty, beat-up vehicles scattered everywhere. They were so ridiculously cheap I decided to rather buy one. I chose 2000 model of a silver Toyota Corolla which was spacious enough to fit in all I needed.
First and of an utmost importance was firewood and if my memory served me right, there should be a local woodcutter who was selling it nearby my house.
When I bought more than enough, I drove back home and stacked all the wood on a wood holder by the stove.
My next stop was Sam's store to buy some groceries and toiletries. Everyone stared at me like I was some kind of curiosity, making me feel utterly uncomfortable. The only thing left to do was smile and wave politely. I hurried out of that store like a polar bear was hot on my heels, rushing right into the Archie's hardware store.
Sadly, there wasn't an exact type of screen I was hoping to buy, but it will more than suffice. I also bought a screwdriver so I could assemble back my PC. When I placed my things on the counter, a young, handsome-looking cashier snickered at me.
"You must be the new girl - Faina Nikolaev." He pushed the box towards him to check it out.
"I see, Jeffery didn't lie; I am famous around here." I laughed as his dimples deepened and his soft green eyes sparkled.
"Jeffery? You met my father?"
I nodded. "Yes, he drove me from the airport yesterday. You must be Josh then. He did briefly mention you," pushing all the stuff aside, I offered him my hand.
"My mother talks about you non-stop, you know. She is thinking of inviting you to dinner sometime this week. But only if you're up for it. I am giving you a head start." He winked conspiratorially, combing back his brown hair with his fingers. I noticed he was nothing like his father. Where he was a little rough around the edges, his son was clean-shaven and had a much leaner built.
"Why, thank you for your warning. But if you're having me, I am already looking forward to meet the rest of your family." I said trying my best to sound as polite as I could.
"Well, consider yourself warned then. If there is gossip in town, my mother knows all about it."
"Thanks." I grinned, sweeping the things I bought from the counter.
"Hey!" He called after me, right when I was about to leave. "I will stop by your house to properly invite you to dinner. And if you need anything, don't hesitate to drop by, all right?" He said kindly.
"Thank you, Josh, I really appreciate it." I offered him a grateful smile when he ran up to me, holding the door for me so I could safely maneuver out with my boxes.
Well that went quite well - so far, people seemed really friendly here. They were probably used of tourists or just other sports enthusiasts running around so they knew to treat them well.
My last stop was Barney's Sports and Clothing Store, which I mentally added to my list of "never to visit again" stores. Barney was a complete and utter laughingstock. He didn't even know where the pillows and duvets were stored, which gave me the impression the managers or rather Barney Senior employed him as an accessory. He was ridiculously good looking with his pale blue eyes and black hair, but sadly his head was filled with hay.
The whole time I was there, his eyes were leveled with my breasts, which by the way were safely covered with my jacket. That apparently didn't bother him. By the third attempt to ask me out, I had enough and literally stormed out of there. Sadly, this was the only store that sold any kind of clothing, so I didn't have much of a choice in the future.
By then I roughly knew which building was which as I drove past the police station and Atsanik's Health Center down to the Northern Lights cafe, where I could make a turn back towards my house.
The first thing I did was unpack my stuff and light a fire in the living room. I let all the doors wide open, so the heat could easily spread from room to room. When it was warm enough it was time to take care of my PC. Now I could still enjoy my free time, but soon enough the pressing deadlines of contracts will start looming above my head. I have spent quite the amount for the move, and even though I still had enough I felt more comfortable with my savings intact.
I placed my PC in the living room, right by the wide window and I absolutely loved the fact whenever I looked up, I saw the beautiful mountains. They looked incredibly close, their white tips shining with the golden light emanating from the sun rays.
A wooden chair I was siting on was a little wobbly, but with the endless amount of inspiration the view game me it was worth it.
The wind started to haul around the corners of my house and the freshly fallen snow started to stick to the ground. But it all looked so unearthly - stunning and peaceful as I stood by a crackling stove. It was all worth it just to be standing here.
