Kyle had to admit the place looked better than he thought it would, even when he searched for it online he didn’t believe the pictures he saw, but he had to say that they didn’t do the place justice. Several cabins ranging in size stood before him hugging this side of the lake while a few more smaller ones stood behind him closer to the woods there. The middle was large and open with more than enough space for parking and other activities, “You going to stand there gawking or are you going to get your luggage?” Jane Turner asked, his mothers old friend sounded just like her sometimes, before he tuned her out he did listen to her talking when she picked him up from the airport.
“Sorry” he said move to the trunk of the car to help with his bags, “Isn’t there someone who can help me with them?” he asked while picking up a duffle bag. Jane clearly wasn’t impressed by his question as she grabbed his right arm and squeezed, “They are real and not just for show, I think you are more than capable of carrying your own luggage” he didn’t know how to respond to that other than to feel very embarrassed and just go back to getting his things out of the car.
“I’ll take you to your cabin and leave you to carry your things inside” she didn’t sound mad at him but she clearly wasn’t very impressed by him. With as many bags as he could carry he followed Jane to one of the larger cabins near the lake, “This one is yours for the reminder of your stay so make yourself at home” Jane said as she stopped in front of the large double story cabin and opened the door. From outside Kyle could already tell that it was a much more luxurious then he thought it was, “Thank you” he said before going inside, “I’ll leave the key in the door, come see me when you’re done settling in and I’ll give you the lay of the land” Jane smiled at him before she left.
Kyle stood in the middle of what looked like a living room and dropped his bags, “Home away from home” he said to the empty cabin as he walked about to get to know the place he’ll “find himself” at, he was kind of glad though that he could just get away from his life even if it was only for a while. From the living room he walked into a rather well sized kitchen which led out to a porch which overlooked the lake and it was breathtaking, the sun had just begun to set over the lake and the town of Heartlake which lay beyond.
After admiring the sunset for a while Kyle returned to the car to get the rest of his things before just plopping them down with the rest of his stuff in the living room. He made his way to the small one story cabin at the very end which had an “Admin” sign in front of it knowing that that was where Jane must be after he had finished getting all of his things out of the car. As he walked in the well let area of cabins he noticed that there weren’t any other cars here and that the other cabins were empty and he hoped that he wasn’t the cause for it.
Knocking before entering he saw Jane behind a desk typing away at a laptop, she stopped once she saw him and threw him a smile, “Kyle, come in dear” she said as she got up and walked over to him. “Sorry if I came off a little mean earlier, I had some personal things which rubbed me the wrong way” she looked completely different from before and he was glad that she wasn’t put off by him and his visit.
“It’s okay, I understand” his understanding words seemed to make her smile even more if that was even possible, “Now time to talk about your stay here” Jane started.
“I did notice that I seemed to be the only person staying here” he chipped in before she could continue, “In this area yes, this part of the resort is reserved for older people, couples, families and the richer side of life so it only really sees people during spring and fall. You just missed the last couple who checked out” she explained which made him feel more at ease, “I also happened to decide that during your stay I am going to have the cabins near yours get a little fixer upper” she winked at him and he smiled at her this time.
She motion for him to leave and he did as she followed him outside, “Okay, so with that out of the way let me explain some things about how it works here” she started again and looked at him to see if he was going to interrupt again, when he didn’t she continued.
“First off, people who stay here fend for themselves but could take the fifteen minute drive into town to buy groceries or eat out. I have stocked your fridge though and will keep it stocked for you so you don’t stand the chance of random school girls recognising you in town” she was clearly joking but he was glad for it nonetheless. “Secondly, the resort continues on to the right side of the lake and then just behind those trees where currently about eighty teenage campers are staying for the reminder of summer is where we have as you can guess our school camp yard with smaller cabins and some bigger ones for staff and the mess hall” she pointed and motioned as she talked and Kyle made sure to pay attention.
“Thirdly, there is plenty to do here; you can follow one of the many walking trails along the lake or in the woods. There is swimming, fishing, dirt and quad bikes that you might find fun”; the last two clearly caught his attention and the sly twinkle in her eyes told her she knew. “We also have a rather large music room here if you wanted to use that, here is a key to it and I don’t have to tell you where that is” she handed him a key and nodded in the direction of a cabin right next to the lake not far from his with a sign next to it saying “music room”, “One last thing, if you get lonely or want to come and eat someone’s cooking other than your own then you can find my house if you follow the cobbled path next to this cabin; at the moment it’s just me and my youngest who is about your age so don’t worry about me boring you with stories about your mother and her younger days all by myself” he smiled at her, he could see why she and his mother were friends now, they were so similar.
After bidding her goodnight and her giving him a basket full of muffins and a homemade loaf of bread he went back to his cabin to just pass out. Before he went up the stairs to what he thought were the rooms though he put the basket in the kitchen and took one last look around his temporary home. “I can live here” he said to himself as he took it all in before heading upstairs and to bed.
