Kyle had spoken to EJ for only a little while longer as his thoughts stayed on the guy he had seen and he had wanted to hurry out there and see if he could find him again. It had been a while since he had felt this free just by looking at someone, after all it wasn’t easy to keep the illusion of Kyle Ryder alive so he had to keep his looks to himself and his thoughts as far away from what he really wanted as possible.
As he spoke to EJ he was reminded of how understanding and willing she was to help him fool the world into believing that they were more than friends, and somewhere along the way through the years he had just never given himself the chance to stop and look at a guy just because he was afraid to be found out. The ease with which he just blatantly stared just now though made him feel so natural and free that he just wanted to chase that feeling and the guy that made him feel it.
Kyle said goodbye to EJ after he had gotten and finished eating another muffin, talking with her for that while longer had calmed him down from the excitement he had felt and he didn’t know if he had wanted it. Going back upstairs to check himself once more and get some shoes before he decided to go for a walk and get some fresh air, and even though he was telling himself it wasn’t to see if he could find the guy again he knew that it was a lie; only a small one since he wanted to check this place out a little more to.
Leaving his cabin Kyle walked over to the back and looked out at the lake, his eyes going to where he had seen the guy walk from. He only noticed a few little piers along the river just now and he wondered why he didn’t notice them before; the guy must’ve gotten in and out from one of them he thought as he looked at them. His eyes scanned the lake until they caught sight of the music room to his right which had a slightly larger pier behind it, he started walking over to the cabin which wasn’t that big but was still as nice as the rest of them.
Taking the key Jane had given him he opened the door and was surprised to see the plethora of music instruments inside and how well soundproofed the cabin was. He walked in and looked from corner to corner at all of them but eventually he looked at the grand piano sitting in the middle of the cabin and he couldn’t take his eyes off of it as he remembered back when he was still in the single digits how he had once sat down and played one at school and gotten praised for being a natural; though the song he had played back then was made up only of the keys he had liked hearing the most.
He didn’t dwell on the memory too long though before he walked over to it and laid a hand on it to feel its smooth surface, he looked up from it to another door which he could tell led to the pier behind the cabin. The same key opened the door and he was greeted by the sight of the large lake again, “This place is beautiful isn’t it?” he heard Jane’s voice behind him which made him turn to face her.
“I can’t explain it, but somehow it all feels a little familiar” Kyle admitted as he turned back to look at the lake, Jane came to stand shoulder to shoulder with him so they could both look out of the door. “That’s not too odd since you were here when you were four or five with your mother and father” he was surprised to hear that since he didn’t remember any of it. “You probably don’t remember it because your father left after that visit” she explained and he thought that it sounded true enough.
“It must not have been an enjoyable visit” he thought aloud and felt a hand on his shoulder afterwards, “I invited you guys back then to try and help your parents work out their differences but it didn’t help since your father was just trying to get a free holiday out of it before the divorce, that man was an ass” he almost smiled at the last part. “You though seemed to enjoy yourself well enough along with my youngest son who was all too happy for the company; you two got up to so much that it was hard to keep an eye on you back then” she laughed at the memory which in turn made Kyle smile, why he didn’t really know since he still couldn’t recall anything about that visit.
They stood in silence for a few moments before Jane spoke, “Your mother called last night and this morning to check up, said she didn’t want to bother you too much by calling you… you should give her a call later and let her know that your fine so that I can have some time to myself as well” that same loving smile was on her face and he knew that she was still just joking with him, “I’ll call her tonight” he said as he walked outside onto the pier.
“I feel so different when I look out at this lake, it makes me feel like the kid I used to be before I became a singer” he admitted, he couldn’t explain it but he felt like he could tell Jane anything, “I know the feeling all too well, which is why I started this resort after college. I wanted others to feel the same way I did when I first looked out at this lake” she joined him on the pier and they both looked out at the lake.
“I think that’s why your mother sent you here, to help you get back to who you were before you became so distant and different” Jane said and it made Kyle think about how much he really did change, “I don’t even know who I was before anymore” he said spacing out a little but a hard slap to his back snapped him out of it. “Start with the music and then start to look inside of yourself to see who you want to be. The heart knows what it wants and often times it will tell you if you just relax and listen to it; and when it finally tells you what it wants you just have to admit to yourself that that’s what you want too, it’s easy” she said before she left, “Remember, start with the music” she said before leaving the music cabin.
Kyle kept looking out at the lake as he thought about what she said, and as he looked he thought about writing a song, but not a song like he wrote for his fans, but a song just for himself. Knowing what he wants to do now he turned to walk back into the music room so he could lock up and roam around the resort some more while he thought about this song that he was going to write.
