I was surprised.
I expected my grandmother to make me go to this new school all on my own. I mean, that's what it sounded like yesterday.
What I didn't expect was her company. She never once mentioned she would come with me.
All she talked about yesterday was about rules, things I would need to learn, and a lot of boring things that I still listened to.
She never once mentioned anything about her dropping me off to school. Although, as I say this, she never actually dropped me off; she was still with me as I sat in the principal's office.
I honestly expected her to make me do all this myself. I mean, I wasn't a child. Yet, here she was, speaking to the principal, asking questions about my teachers, my classes, about the subjects, about exams...
Why did I get the feeling there would be home tutoring after this?
Well, I should be happy she's getting involved in my life, rather than abandoning me at the school gates and making me fend for myself.
As much as I loved my parents, they didn't get on the plane ride with me and they didn't drop me off at my grandmother's doorsteps. They only dropped me off at the airport. My mother did say she and my father were exiled by grandmother, but still... I felt like I was left on my own.
"And when will Samuel arrive?" My grandmother's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
That's right, I would be meeting my cousin today. I hoped he wasn't as strict as our grandmother.
"He's just outside." The principal got up and motioned.
"Good."
With that, my grandmother got up from her seat and let the principal open the door for her. When I looked at the principal, I could see my grandmother made him nervous. You could tell just by looking.
Outside the door, I saw an older teenage boy with the same baby blue eyes my grandmother and I shared, but instead of our dark red hair, he had dark brown hair.
He looked different from what I imagined. Instead of looking cold and scary like our grandmother, he looked so bubbly and full of life.
This was my cousin.
"Redah, this is Samuel, your cousin. I will leave you now. Samuel can drive you home when you have finished school." Grandmother looked at me for a moment. I wasn't sure what to do but then she gave me a nod and turned around to leave.
"Hi." I gave my cousin an awkward smile.
"Hello, cousin~" He was the complete opposite of me, he didn't seem affected by our grandmother at all.
"You can call me Sam. The only person who calls me Samuel is our grandmother." He laughed.
"O-Oh, okay. Then, you can call me Red. My friends call me Red."
"Ah, cause of the red hair? Nice, I like it. Too bad I didn't get the same genes; I got stuck with brown hair." He laughed.
Thankfully for me, Sam seemed like a nice person I could get along with.
He showed me where my classes were and where the cafeteria and everything else was. He also gave me his number so I could text him when I finished my classes. The best part was, he said he would introduce me to his friends.
I thought I would have to start from scratch at this new school but with my cousin around, I wouldn't have to completely start from zero.
