Kane awakes but doesn’t open their eyes. They know they were in a car because of the streaks of light passing over them every few seconds. It might be Clark & Kane who wants Clark, but it might also be their mom. They aren’t willing to take that risk. So they just sit there pretending to be asleep. Their foot still stings, but a little duller than earlier. It was wrapped in rough, damp bandages. Their skin is still coated with blood, & is also caked with mud.

After a few minutes, Kane’s head lurches back & they sneeze. Celine turns her head to look at them. “Oh good, you’re up. What were you thinking?” Kane shifts back to how they were & pretended they were still asleep. “Robert, I-”

Kane balls their fists & mumbles, “That’s not my name.”

“Oh good, you're awake.”

Kane sighs & opens his eyes. “What?”

“You can start by telling me how you ended up covered in blood?”

“No.”

“No, seriously! You got quite a bit of explaining to do sir. I-”

“Don’t call me sir again.” Kane starts tapping to avoid an emotional outburst.

Celine grips wheel & sighs. “Okay. Let me make this clear. You have two options. You can either tell me what the fuck happened with you. Or you can be grounded until you graduate. Your choice.” She waited for an answer, but Kane remained silent. “Okay. If that’s ho-”

“It rained blood.”

“...excuse me?”

“Droplets of blood fell out of the sky.”

“Honey, is that what you think happened?” Kane remains silent, gripping their seat. “I’m worried about you. I’m worried that you need some help.”

“I’m fine, mother.” Kane raises their voice.

“You’re obviously not! You keep waking up late. You’re going through this...phase-”

“Oh, so you think I’m crazy because I’m not a boy?!”

“N-no honey that’s not what I mea-

“What did you mean then.”

Celine pauses. “I mean, you said you think that blood rain from the sky. How am I supposed to take that?”

“I don’t know! It’s the truth & I’m tired of you never listening to me!”

And then, nothing. Celine doesn’t retort & Kane adds nothing else. They just sit there with tension oozing between them. Celine turns on the radio, but it doesn’t help. They’re just forced to be with each other for 20 more minutes until they reach their house.

They drive into the garage & as Celine gets out, she says, “I’m going to sign you up for therapy okay.”

“Cool.” Kane gets out of the car

“Honey, I don’t mean to be the bad guy here, I just think you need...an expert to help with whatever’s going on.”

“Great.”
