Charlie and Lukas stopped at a café near the clinic where Hiro was doing his internship. It was the only place they could hang out in public that was far from their home and Charlie’s father’s work.
They had already ordered drinks and waited for Hiro to join them inside. Usually, they would have been on the terrasse, but it had gotten cold, and the last thing they wanted was to freeze to death.
Charlie looked at Lukas, whose leg was moving rapidly. He had been on edge since they sat down.
"Okay. Seriously what's going on with you? You bailed on me this morning, and now you’re all fidgety. You don’t fidget."
Lukas stopped and glanced at his friend. Charlie was waiting with the look that told him he wasn’t going to give in this time. Lukas sighed. He knew he was going to have to tell him eventually. And clearly, leaving him to figure things out on his own was a terrible idea.
"Okay… Let's say hypothetically that someone saw two people having sex."
"So, you watched a porno?"
"I'm not talking about me, and no!" Lukas exclaimed loudly. People turned around and looked at them. He pulled back slightly and then leaned in to make sure that only Charlie could hear him. "Two real people."
"Okay… keep going."
"Okay, this person sees two people having sex, and the same night he has a dream. About the guy. He’s doing things..." Lukas stopped. He wasn't sure he was ready to tell him what Dream Tate did to him. He leaned in closer. "He has a dream about the guy and gets hard."
Charlie's eyes widened.
"You got hard?"
"I'm not talking about me!"
"Okay.” Charlie pretended to be clueless. “Right, sorry."
"Anyway… so yeah. He gets hard after dreaming about the guy." Lukas paused. He knew this would be a hard question to ask, but Charlie was the only person who would answer him honestly. "Does it make that person gay?"
Charlie stared at him. He blinked rapidly while remaining silent before pulling away.
"I regret asking you what's wrong."
"Why?"
"Cause you said something stupid."
"Wha… but I'm serious."
"I know." Charlie took a sip of his drink. "That's what's scares me."
"Fine." Lukas pouted and crossed his arms. "If you won't answer me, I'll just ask Hiro when he arrives."
"Please don't ask my boyfriend stupid questions." Charlie dropped his head.
"What stupid questions?" Hiro arrived and sat down next to Charlie. "Hey."
"Hey." Charlie smiled.
They shared a tender moment as they stared at each other lovingly, which was nothing new for Something Lukas.
"So, what's going on?"
"Lukas has a stupid question to ask you, but I told him not to."
"Oh, but you know how much I love his stupid questions." Hiro smiled as he got comfortable and wrapped an arm around Charlie's shoulders. "Shoot, Lukas."
Lukas took a deep breath to prepare himself. He knew he could talk to Hiro about anything. He was like a second Charlie. Only a little meaner since he liked to tease him.
"Okay. So let's say hypothetically…" He stopped when he noticed Charlie and Hiro give each other a look. "What?"
"Nothing. Keep going." Hiro grabbed Charlie's drink and took a sip.
"So hypothetically, someone sees two people having sex."
"You watching pornos now, Lukas?" Hiro smirked.
"No! And I'm not talking about me."
The people next to them glance over, and Lukas shrinks in his seat.
"Right. Sorry. These two people, is it a guy and a girl? Two guys? Two girls?"
"How is that important?"
"I need all the elements if you want me to answer you."
Lukas looked at Hiro suspiciously. He didn’t see how it mattered, but if it would help him get answers.
"A guy and a girl." Hiro nodded. "Anyway, this person sees them having sex, and when he goes to bed, he has a dream about the guy."
"You dreaming about guys now? Is the guy hot?"
Hiro grinned in the matter that told Lukas he was going to be teasing him about it later.
"I don't know!" Lukas yelled again, drawing attention to himself. "I'm not into guys," he whispers.
"You can still tell whether someone is attractive or not."
"He's good-looking, I guess," Lukas said quickly. "Anyway, so this person has a dream about that guy and wakes up, and he's hard. Does it make that person gay?"
Hiro stared at Lukas. Charlie watched his boyfriend and smirked. Hiro leaned towards Charlie.
"You were right. That was a stupid question."
"I told you." Charlie smiled.
"Guys, I'm serious."
"We know," Charlie said.
"What I want to know is why you’re so surprised when you said you got hard. I mean, that's a normal physiological response."
"Not for me!"
Lukas’s latest outburst got the attention of everyone, including the workers that threw him glares. He grabbed his hood and pulled it over his head to hide.
"Lukas," Charlie said softly. "You just outed yourself."
"What?" Lukas looked at Charlie and realized the words he had just spoken. "Fuck!"
"So, wait." Hiro got closer to the table. "You don't usually get hard? Like ever or just when you think of guys." Lukas gave Hiro a look. "Oh shit. Do you have ED? But you're too young to have ED."
“Um… it’s...”
Lukas knew that he was going to tell Hiro at some point. They had known each other for two years, and they were pretty close. He still didn’t know how to say it out loud. He was too afraid too. He looked up at Charlie. The look was enough for Charlie to understand what he meant.
"I'll explain some other time," Charlie said to Hiro. "So, this is why you've been acting weird since yesterday. You peeped on two people having sex, and it got you all excited down there."
"Don't say it like that." Lukas dropped his head on the table. "You're making me sound like a pervert."
Charlie looked at his friend. He reached for the hood covering Lukas’s head, and he pulled it back a little to look at him.
“And this dream? What kind of dream was it? Like was it him standing there, or was there more?”
“He…” Lukas’s face flushed. He wasn’t sure he was ready to tell them about what Dream Tate had done to him. “He was doing stuff?”
“Sexual stuff? To you?”
Lukas nodded. He hoped they wouldn't pry more. He was already feeling really embarrassed. Having to say the word would only make it worse.
“Well now,” Hiro smirked as he held back a small laugh. “Lukas, you’re full of surprises today.”
"Are you attracted to this person?"
"Hell no. He is a total dick."
"So it was just a momentary attraction?" Hiro asked. Lukas looked up and shrugged. "Then you're not gay."
"Really?"
"Yes."
Lukas smiled. He felt better. Like a weight had been lifted off of him. He grabbed his drink and started to drink it.
“Would it have been bad if it did make you gay?”
Lukas turned to Hiro. He realized how his reaction to the news must’ve looked to them. He lowered his drink.
“No. I don’t think so.” Lukas paused for a minute. “To tell you the truth, I haven’t really thought about it. I have other problems to worry about. I think I don’t want to be attracted to that guy.”
“Is he that bad?”
“The worse.”
“It’s not Josh, is it?” Charlie frowned.
“Are you crazy? I would never...” Lukas gagged. “That guy is a homophobic dick and a bully.”
“Is he the reason for that?” Hiro pointed at the scar on Lukas’s head.
“Yeah.”
Hiro's eyes flared. He was protective of those he cared about. Lukas included since he was important to Charlie. Hiro turned to Charlie.
“Does he bully you too?”
“No.” Charlie shook his head. “He seems to only have eyes for Lukas.”
Lukas wanted to say it wasn't true, but that would be a lie. Whenever he was with Charlie, Josh would only attack him. It was like Charlie didn't exist. While he had a giant neon sign that said: Bully me.
“Sounds like someone's deep in the closet.”
“Yeah, I think so too.”
“But I get it,” Hiro smirked as he leaned back into his chair. “Lukas is an adorable little boy. Must be hard for him to stay away.”
“What?” Lukas gagged again, placing his hand in front of his mouth. “Don’t say that. I think I’m actually going to puke.”
Charlie and Hiro laughed. Lukas glared at them as they enjoyed torturing him. After a while, Hiro and Charlie started to talk, and Lukas' stared at the table. Focusing on his drink. He was glad he told Charlie about what had happened. Though he did omit the fact that he followed said dream guy like a complete stalker. He would tell eventually. Hopefully, the whole thing would blow over, and Tate would forget about it. And him.
