Alig was holding a large leaf from one of the plants growing near the shore over the Man to shield him from the sun.
"It must have been fifty years since the last time an outsider appeared. I didn't realise you could get here by sea, though. How could you even leave your island? How did you get here? How?"
The Man woke up.
"Yes! I'm up already! You can stop shouting my name already!" yelled the man. Alig was so shocked he fell over and dropped the leaf.
"You're awake?! I thought you were going to die!"
"Why am I all burned up?" Asked the man.
"I don't know, that's how we found you."
"Really? I must have been in the sun for a while."
"You don't remember what happened to you?" Asked Alig. The man sat and closed his eyes for a while.
"Excuse me, but"
"I'm thinking, give me a bit to wake up."
"Ok"
They sat in silence for a while before the man opened his eyes and said:
"I think I have some amnesia."
"What's amnesia?" asked Alig.
"You don't know? It's when you can't remember things about your life. Right now all I can remember about myself is my name, Hao." said Hao.
"Is that your first or last name?"
"First name? Last name? Neither, I suppose. It's just my name."
"Maybe you forgot your last name?"
Hao thought for a moment.
"No, I don't know any concept of having multiple names. It doesn't sound familiar to me."
"Oh, right. I guess things must be different on your island then."
"This is an island is it?"
"What else would it be?" asked Alig, an incredulous look smeared across his face.
"A part of a continent."
"What is a continent?" Asked Alig.
"A continent is a really big island. How come the guy with amnesia is explaining everything here? Shouldn't you be asking me questions to help me get my memories back?"
"It's still an island then, isn't it? Even if it's really big. I'm sorry, I've never met someone with no memories before. I don't know what I should be doing."
"What's your name, old man?"
"Alig Aligulus"
"That's an unusual name. I don't think I've heard one like it before."
"Well, I've never heard a name like Hao either." Hao stood up, revealing a large gash across his back.
"That looks bad!" exclaimed Alig.
"Yeah, it hurts about as much as you'd expect."
"Sit down then. My son is bringing the doctor out here as we talk."
Hao sat back down. "You have a doctor on this island, do you?"
"Of course, how else would we keep ourselves healthy?"
"How come I can understand you? I'm definitely not from around here."
"It’s a peculiarity of the island. Here, everyone can understand everyone else."
"Do people often wash up on the shore?"
"No, but people do visit every now and then, it's always a big event in the village"
"What's the village's name?"
"Konseses."
"Oh, that is even weirder than your name. What's your son's name?"
"Rami Aligulus"
"How come the last part of his name is the same as yours?"
"That's how last names work here. You inherit it from one of your parents. And, if you distinguish yourself, your last name becomes your first name plus some other word."
"Aligulus, so Alig and Ulus. I don't know the word Ulus, what's it mean?"
"It means that I slew a dangerous beast of the land."
"Oh! How big was it?"
"As big as a house!"
"How did you do it?"
"With my fishing spear of course." Alig said as he reached down and picked up his fishing spear.
"It looks like a mighty weapon!"
"It's name is "The Slayer""
"What a name! What beast did you slay?"
"It was a giant python that was eating goats and children, and stealing gold and jewels. It fell in a mighty fight, it had me wound up in a bone crunching coil, I broke a leg and all of my ribs! But I was able to thrust "The Slayer" through its heart just before it ate me! Then, the monstrous beast began to convulse, as snakes do when you kill them. But the snake’s blood was all over me, so I was able to slide out of its grip before it crushed me in it's death throes." Alig recalled.
"What a story!" said Hao. "Can I hold "The Slayer"?"
"Absolutely." Alig handed the spear to Hao, who held it up in the air as he inspected it.
"How come it's made out of driftwood, why wouldn't you make its handle a normal stick?"
"A stick?" asked Alig.
"Yeah, you know, like from a branch on a tree."
"That's because we don't have any trees here."
"But you know the word tree?" asked Hao.
"Well, we do have trees, but they're banana trees, whose bark is not as strong as wood that washes up on our shores."
"I see." said Hao.
"Does this beach have a name?" Hao asked.
"Yes, we call it N'daborduzaro"
"Why does everything here have a tongue twister name?!"
"It's a symbol of intelligence if your name is difficult to pronounce. You should hear the King's name."
"That's a stupid, who came up with the idea? Was it someone with a really awkward name? What's the king's name?"
"Some people agree with you, but everyone goes along with it, I don’t know who came up with it, it’s just how things are here. I can't pronounce the King’s name, so I can't tell you."
"I bet it was the King’s idea. Can you spell the King’s name out?"
"Spell?" said Alig, who started to laugh. "I can't write!"
"Why not?"
"Only the King can read and write, don't you know anything?"
"I have amnesia! So I guess I don’t know much. This island is strange. I bet it has a really difficult name, right?"
"Urenkilosusos"
"That's not as bad as I was expecting. If having a difficult name is a sign of intelligence, then why did you call your son Rami? That seems a bit too easy doesn't it?"
"His mother named him."
"Oh. Is she not smart or something?"
"No, she just doesn't care about things like that."
"When's your son going to get here anyway?"
"Soon, Konseses isn't too far away."
