Okay, whose smart idea was it to go out into the desert during a sandstorm of this degree? Honestly!
Seline couldn't see a darn thing through the brown, dusty air. Curse these strange urges to travel in packs, she was thinking. Maybe if Jed allowed her to take some of his little miracle pills, she would've stayed put in the plane, but no. Those ridiculous animal instincts kicked in, and in just a few seconds she found herself out in the broiling desert, half-way buried in the sand. Curse him! If only she could fight the urge to get her only pack member back.
She didn't know how far away from the plane she'd gotten, or even in what direction she'd traveled from it! She was really hoping those animal instincts would kick in soon, cause all she had left was her sense of smell to get back. And her leg was in so much pain… She must've been crawling, 'cause there was no way she'd have been able to walk on it, bipedal or quadruped.
"Ugh." She reached her hand out in front of herself and dug it into the sand. It was burning hot. She whimpered and pulled herself forward a few inches. Maybe if she tried to kickstart the side effects of the virus, they would just take over on their own. She sniffed the air, trying to see if she could pick up any sort of scent on her own. All that got her was sand up her nose. She sneezed and spat all the sand out. How absolutely perfect. She laid down in the sand and sniveled. Just how much more of a mess was this stupid virus gonna get her into?!
Jingle jingle.
Her ears perked up to the sound. She quickly stopped having her pity party and laid perfectly still. What was that? She looked around. She couldn't see anything through the raging wind and her hair being hurled all over the place.
There it went again. That faint jingling noise. Why did it sound so familiar to her? She pushed herself up and tried to take in her surroundings from another angle. That was probably not such a good idea. A large figure came soaring through the air, pinning her to the ground by her neck. "Mmph!"
She wheezed, her eyes dripping from being knocked down, and from all the sand. "Jed?!" she barely choked out. The dog tags around his neck were dangling down onto her chest. "You can get off me now." She reached out to shove him off, but that was the second bad idea she came up with in a row. He didn't seem to take kindly to her reactions. She looked up into his face. There was something definitely wrong with him. His eyes weren't filled with over-excitedness—he was intensely glaring at her. His razor-sharp fangs were bared and he was letting out an awful, deep snarl.
This was probably what it looked like when the virus got the better of its victim.
Before he could snap his teeth at her face, she threw her arms out in front of herself and dug her claws into his chest, gripping into his flesh and throwing him off forcefully. His hands became unhinged from her neck, leaving new glistening red scratches where they had been ripped away. Seline dragged herself back and pulled herself up onto her feet, not bothering to tend to her new injuries. She was pretty sure he wasn't done with his attack, anyways. Her 'episodes' lasted a lot longer than that, and she wasn't nearly as infected as he was. She held her hands out protectively and waited for him to get back up.
He stared at her over his shoulder while he laid there in the sand. The black mane down his back was sticking up like a frustrated cat and his tail was swishing agitatedly. He flipped himself over, standing on all fours, and lunged at her again.
Without thinking, Seline put too much weight on her broken leg in anticipation of having to 'catch' Jed, and the pain shot all the way up into her spine. The sudden pain set off her own episode of primal mindless animal rage. When she was knocked over again, she used the momentum to flip herself on top, then she pinned him down as he'd done to her. She let out a threatening growl at him, daring him to do it again. She was the Alpha Female, and he had no right to be attacking her.
His snarling stopped and he closed his mouth. She stepped off of him, walking a few steps away, still keeping her eyes on him. He didn't move. As a lower level in the pack than she, he knew better. Seline circled him a few times, then sat down, looking content, even though she was badly bleeding and trembling with excitement and tension.
Jed, still very much not back to his normal self, got back on all fours and bounded away whimpering, with his tail between his legs. Seline watched as he disappeared into the sandstorm.
