With a smile that she could share her life with her brother, Leah went to search the car for her wallet, knowing she had put it somewhere in the front when they left the last gas station. Looking in the door and the center console, believing those to be the most likely places to find it, Leah felt a tingle down her spine. Someone was trying to creep up on her. Spinning quickly, she grabbed the person behind her by the throat, shoving them against the side of the car and snarling, “What do you want? Tell your friends to back off.”
Shocked at being caught, the young man held up his hands in a non-threatening manner. Lowering him to the ground and loosening her hold but not letting go, the man called out to the others with him. Two males slowly walked out of the shadows with their hands in front of them, showing they didn’t mean any harm. Knowing there was still another man hiding, Leah squeezed the throat of the one in front of her and growled, “And the last one. Don’t think you can lie to me about him.” Pointing with her other hand, she snarled at the remaining man to come out. Once again, shock crossed the faces of the males around her, Leah again asked, “What do you want? Why were you sent here?”
Seeing that the one she was holding wanted to speak, she once more loosened her hold, allowing him to say, “Our Alpha felt your presence and wanted to know what you were doing here. We were headed to his house and were the closest to you. He wanted us to bring you to him since you didn’t present yourself and ask for permission to be here.”
“Not that it’s any of your business but I was planning to go see your Alpha in the morning, at a more reasonable time. Call him and see if he’s agreeable, I’ve been on the road all day and just want to relax before dealing with a new pack and territory disputes.”
Realizing that she was serious about calling the Alpha, one of the other males moved away to call him. Not moving far enough away, Leah could hear the conversation between the young man and the apparent Alpha, who seemed younger than a typical Alpha, but Leah knew not to judge others by age.
“She doesn’t want to come with us. She said she’ll come in the morning though.”
The Alpha replied, “Dane, do you believe that? She’s a foreign wolf on our territory, she needs to be brought in immediately. She can’t be trusted until we’ve met her. Besides, she’s a lone wolf and they should never be trusted.”
Insulted by the fact that others didn’t trust her kind because of the few rather than the many, Leah flexed her fingers against the man in front of her. She could smell his fear at being handled by her and even though he and the other males were dominants, she was far more powerful than them and they knew to fear it. Especially since she hadn’t used any of her wolf’s power to back her up.
Hesitating, the man named Dane said, “She, uh, she’s extremely dominant. She detected Callen in the woods, even though he was hidden in the shadows and was using a scent masker. She pointed right at him, not his general area but like right at him. And she’s holding Russel but not using her wolf. She got the drop on him even as we snuck up on her.”
Leah could hear the annoyed tone from the other end of the phone, “Just bring her in. She can’t be left until tomorrow if what you say is true. Tell her no harm will come to her, on my honor, until we know if she poses a threat.”
“Yes, sir. I’ll get her to come with us.”
Returning to the group of four by the car, Dane spoke to Leah, “Our Alpha won’t wait. He—”
Interrupting, she said, “Yeah, I know. You weren’t that far away. If you’ll give me two seconds, I’ll come with you.” Releasing her hold on the man in front of her, Leah turned towards the house, not wanting to leave her brother by himself.
Not liking that she wasn’t headed towards their car, the man who had tried hiding in the woods reached out to grab her. Before his arm could make contact, Leah grabbed him in return and threw him to the ground, faster than any of them could react. “If you want to keep your limbs, I’d suggest not touching me without my permission.” Glancing at all of them, in turn, she continued, “I said I’ll just be two seconds. I already agreed to come with you, there’s no reason to force me to go with you.” Jumping off the man, Leah quickly opened the door and called out to Alex.
Hearing his sister from the front hall, Alex walked towards her, his head looking at his phone, ready for her to call for dinner. Reaching her, though, he found her being warily followed by four young males. “Uh, Lee, what’s going on?”
“Go find a scrap of paper and write to Mom that we’ll be out. Apparently, the Alpha is pissed I didn’t present myself immediately and sent his goons to fetch me.” With a smirk, she added, “And obviously it didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to.”
Looking from his sister to the males behind her, he let out a bark of laughter before going to the living room for his sketchbook to leave a note to their mom. He could her Leah arguing with one of the males in the front hallway. “You didn’t tell us there was another wolf here!”
“You didn’t ask. Besides, if you were too busy trying to sneak up on me that you couldn’t smell him, that’s not my fault. And if your Alpha couldn’t sense him, not my fault either.” That was his sister, always looking for a fight and always sticking up for him. She never took the time to think before opening her mouth either, just let the words spill out, not filtering her thoughts from her speech.
Walking back towards the door with the paper and pen, Alex planted himself next to his sister, not wanting to be left behind. One of the males who surrounded them leaned in close and sniffed him, saying, “He smells like a wolf but also too much human. I don’t think he’s shifted yet.”
Looking exasperated, Leah turned to the male, “He hasn’t had his first shift yet. He’ll shift in the next few months, but I was planning on telling all this to your Alpha, not to you idiots.” Alex was shaking his head at his sister, she was reckless, never taking a moment to think. “Let’s get this over with. Our Mom should be arriving soon and since she’s human, she doesn’t fully understand all this hierarchical stuff.”
Leading the siblings to their car, two of the males started whispering between themselves, “This really sucks. This was supposed to be the party of the year; our last major celebration before school started. Of course, Markus is the one to have us bring them in now instead of tomorrow.”
“Why couldn’t it have been Mace or Matt? They would have waited. Emery doesn’t seem worried, otherwise, he would have already called someone to get them rather than us on our way to a party.”
“Emery is strict but also fair. Maybe he called Markus, knowing that he was more serious than the others.” The two males went back and forth as they tried to figure out how to fit all six of them into the car.
Calling out to their escorts, Leah tried stirring up more trouble, “So which one is the actual Alpha then? One of the M’s? What were their names? Markus, Mace, and Matt?” The whispering males shut their mouths, shocked she could hear them when the other males weren’t reacting to them. Continuing, now that she had their attention she said, “Or was it the other guy? Emery, was it? Since he’s calling to tell others what to do, I’ll assume he’s the one I should be talking to?”
Not liking what she was saying, the males quickly filled the car and then sped off to their territory, ignoring the siblings for the twenty-minute drive. Pulling off the main road onto a well-traveled dirt road, the car slowed down before stopping in front of a mansion hidden behind a large forest.
